Cold Blue Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 What the?? I bought Cold Blue, my 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe about 6 months ago. After getting her home, and looking at most everything, I noticed that an ignition coil had been installed in the trunk, just behind the spare tire, and wires going to it. But there is no main lead plugged into the coil top, it's just open. My 48 has been rewired to be a 12 volt system. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why an ignition coil would be installed in the trunk, or what it's purpose would be. You boys got any ideas? Thanks, Blue. Quote
Los_Control Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 flame thrower exhaust I bet, think you would mount a spark plug in the tail pipe, then when you goose the throttle and flip the switch to provide power, would shoot flames out the back. Sounds like yours is not complete system but likely what it was used for. 1 Quote
Phil Martin Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 could it be for afterburner in tail pipe? Quote
Cold Blue Posted October 11, 2018 Author Report Posted October 11, 2018 Wow! I bet you guys are right. It would be neat to have flames belch out the exhaust pipe! I will have to see what is necessary to complete the system. Thanks!!!! Blue. Quote

PT81Jan Posted October 12, 2018 Report Posted October 12, 2018 ... as an excuse you could tell people which are not amused, this was an early type of exhaust aftertreatment. Just for reduction of NOx`es .. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 12, 2018 Report Posted October 12, 2018 I was once following an old ford to a car show. His car was equipped with flame throwers in both exhaust pipes. I was several car lengths behind him when he cut loose with a firefart. The stench was overwhelming. I backed off even further and made up my mind on the spot to never install such a device. Quote
