47heaven Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 According to the reference info on painting the P15 inside engine area, what color gray was used to paint up under the hood, inside fenders, panel, fire wall...etc. What would be the closet match with today's paint and would it be flat, semi-gloss or gloss? (This isn't mentioned in the reference, from what I can see). Quote
Guest jtw3749c Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 I ran into the same thing with my 49 De Soto. The Detroit cars had this blue gray color. I took the inner fender to the local paint store and had him match it up. I had him write down the formula. Now if I can find it. A better picture is located here. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j162/jtw37/49%20DES%20Progress/paintedinner.jpg Quote

There is a Rustoleum color that looks similar to this one that I used on my steering wheel and column. Yeah, if you get the formula, that would be great! I have no sample to take down because the original color was sprayed over years ago' Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 Darin, firewall and underside of hood should be body color. Inner fenders may have been a dark sort of steel blue-grey color. Or possibly a semi-flat black. .......I think more probably the black. Radiators and horns seem to be black. Engine silver with oil filler, coil, air cleaner, etc black...... Here are a couple original cars in a local salvage yard....firewall is body color. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 This car was at the Nashville Good Guys show last summer..... Firewall matches body on blueskies 50 Plym..... Quote
47heaven Posted August 21, 2007 Author Report Posted August 21, 2007 Okay, Bob...That solves a lot of the mystery. I'll go down to the auto paint store and have them mix up a quart of the exterior paint for the firewall. Now all I need to do is find that steel blue-gray paint and I'll be set. The Rustolium paint I thought was it is a different gray. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 Here is a picture of my 48 when we were starting to take it apart. Looks pretty clear that the inner fenders were black on my car. Quote
47heaven Posted August 22, 2007 Author Report Posted August 22, 2007 Okay...went down to Finish Masters today and had a quart of the exterior green mixed up and gray steel blue...to the best that we could match it, according to the above pic. I think this will look better than black. I'll post pics of the results in a couple days. Thanks again for all the help! Quote
greg g Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 The under color looks pretty good, but I would suggest a bit of flattener. Indise of fenders, underside of trunk lid all show that undercoating color. Inside of the truk on my bizzy coupe is body color. Black Quote
