3 point seatbelt installation on a convertible

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi and hello to to wizards out there :-)

By law I am required to install a retractable seatbelt in the rear bench in order to take my son along. Hence i shall install one each side. Certainly makes sense from a security point of view.

Now, any recommendations from where to buy and most importantly any pictures available to show me how you have done it. After all being a convertible there simply is no upper door post. Not to mention that fact that with benchseats make it more complicated also. thanks

I would suggest that you look at some cars that offered rear shoulder harness that retracted back into the package tray.  As Germany was even in the 70's when I was there very strict on any and all modifications, I would look to your local law enforcement agency for guidance as to what may or may not be acceptable style or mount procedure.    If you are only required to have a lap belt,  your choices are greatly expanded.  Be careful on many unit available over the internet, be sure that DOT or E-Mark certificate is sew on...again, start with your locals for what they have determined are approved code belts, go from there.

As usually - kindly appreciated :-)

Juliano’s sells seatbelt setups, but I can’t address whether their product would pass Germany’s stricter car codes. They may be able to tell you, but I don’t know how much they market overseas.

You might look  at the web pages as how to's for their seat belts, many examples- All are certified to US standards and have sewn on tags to show same. Not the cheapest but they are quality and have many colors/styles available.

Many ideas if nothing else, each install is slightly different.

US has no installation inspections but I have heard most European countries are quite stringent of all vehicle modifications.

Maybe copy one of Julianos  installs and save it to show the inspector?

Best,

DJ

Thomba.....I'd be looking at the way the various German car companies do rear seat belts in their convertibles as their procedures would have to obviously pass the German laws.....Mercedes, BMW, Audi & Porsche all make cars that have rear seats and have rear seat belts, surely there must be some way of using their technology in an old car...........to be honest I've never bothered to look at what these modern cars use so this is just a suggestion but I'd think that there must be a way tho' the shoulder anchorage would be the main sticking point........dunno if this is much help............andyd

To the content: Well one thing is clear - and my little internet research success is supporting this note - the subject matter especially in regard to a convertible has not really found the level of interest for the market to really offer a sound solution. I will need to further my hunt and happily keep you posted. Thom
