I run ME edition..it is a bastard and should have been pulled from the market and purchasers refunded..after a long period of time on line (DSL) I have to shut off the computer for a reset as I often get a tab function that returns you to previous page..seems to be the only prob and the only fix thus far.

Have you used your disc management tools of late?

does not sound fun at all...I do no gaming at all and definiely not on the web..no music down loads..I also did a search for similar symptom you desribed with no valid returns. Do a disc cleanup--disc scan and defrag..what you got to loose? I do this quiate often anymore and it sure is a plus...there are times I cannot do a disc scan even with all application turned off (only Exployer and Systray on, this must be active) unless I do a Disc cleanup..at time Ihave had to arun this twice for it to run the others. ME is not your friend..not that familar with XP home edition.

by chance do you have a keyboard laying around from another computer..borrow from the neighbor for a quick check..did momma spill anything on the the keyboard..alien blood drip on it from the monitor while playing games...???? Could very well be just a common bus on the keyboard printed circuit shorting or maybe opened up somehow...

I agree, find another keyboard. There are very few keyboard shortcuts that use the letter D. The most common is ALT + D to add a bookmark in a web browser.

keyboards can be had for less than $10 at the local geek shop.

If you are running XP and it starts fine try and go to help and support and try restore back to last good date. I have had to do this on occasion because of junk that comes from site without you knowing.

Shel,

looks like a keyboard issue to me.

The keys that cause problems are in the same area.

The screensaver may not work as the computer gets information from the keyboard (scroll back) so it won't start.

Could be something in the keyboard (paperclip, stapple (I have seen a lot of stuff in keyboards!)) that causes a key to 'hang'.

I agree sounds like a keyboard issue. Don't know why it would cause the other problems unless it just overloads the system with keyboard signals causing it to lock up.

On top of the keyboard, you may install adaware and spybot (both free) and run those. Even deeper still (more user intensive) hijack this is a good program.

Shel,

if the operating system is XP (as you stated) it should recognize the USB keyboard without a problem.

It should even be ok to hotswap it but call me old fashioned , I tend to shut down these systems first and then plug in the hardware.

Firefox should be fine to use in home environments. Sometimes business applications have problems with it and want IE.

On the antispyware.

Both Adaware and Spybot are no longer up to their task.

The writers of the malware (spyware, adware etc) are always finding new ways to get into your system and the oldfashioned way with definitions is not up to the task.

I like Counterspy (www.sunbelt-software.com) as it stops these pests before they can install themself.

I assume you needed the chainsaw fixed for the old keyboard ;)

Shel,

I had lots of problems with spyware and adware. Tried all the applications you have including Mcaffee which did no good either.

I've been using Panda antivirus for the past two years and have not had any trouble since. I've had to take the computer in to be cleaned off on occasion. Not since I installed panda.

It's about $50/yr for their service and it updates every day. There are a few other good virus services out there as well.

At least it was a keyboard problem that causes you to need a new one. I was going to try out that CRC contact cleaner on mine as I've used contact cleaner before for the same reason and the CRC ate it up. Melted the keys together etc etc. Guess the CRC stuff is much stronger than the Radio shack brand. Needless to say I ruined a fairly new wireless keyboard.

Now that you know what the problem is and have nothing to lose why not open up the keyboard and try cleaning it. Sounds as though "someone" spilt something on it and it's sticking. A good cleaning may save you a trip down the road. Way back when I used to work summer jobs cleaning school & office typwriters. You would not beleive the things you find in them. Back then they didnt have the air in a can so we used small compressors to blow out the keyboards before we broke them down to clean inside. You learn real quick to lean back before blowing them out. Sometimes it looked like a confetti parade. Glad to hear ya got it figured out anyhow.
