Rodney Bullock Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 My uncle has been on me to start restoring his 74 Roadrunner. It's been sitting since the Carter administration, The bulk head at the firewall is giving me the biggest headache I have ever had, like my charger(66) this bulk head gets this green like resido and sometimes it stops the car from starting. It's been hot here these past weeks, darn hot! I have to move the car to the front of the old garage to work on it then move it back. When it doesen't start it makes it twice as rough. My question to you all is what type of chemical can I get that can dissolve this stuff off electrical connectors and keep it off? I have seen 00 welding cables that we use on our 6volt cars cut open and between the copper strans you would see this green powder like substance. Anyone one know how to rid this from electrical stuff? Our pre war cars don't have a bulk head the wires just come in from the engine compartment taped up nice, thank goodness:cool: modern isn't always easy! Quote
PatS.... Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 Try contact cleaner from Radio Shack. Works pretty good for stuff like that. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 Rodney..find yourself a good electronic supply house in your area...I cannot remember the name but there is a a birte dip out there that will clean this completely and easily. They will know just what you need, or at least should..we used it in the ship repair business... Quote
greg g Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 also when you get those connectors clean, put some dielectric grease on them. A good thick application will keep them from corrosion from forming for a good long time. Quote
Brad Lustig Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 You could always look for cables meant for boats. They coat the individual strands to keep this from happening. Just be aware that if the word "MARINE" is attached to the product, it bumps the price up exponentially. Second the dielectric grease aka silicone grease. Sticks around much better than vaseline.
