bridog57 Posted October 22, 2016 Report Posted October 22, 2016 I wanted to check the fluid on the transmission. How do I do this and what should I put in if it is low? I also was wondering what type of oil do you put in the rear end? 3 speed manual Quote
wizard0ne0 Posted October 28, 2016 Report Posted October 28, 2016 With my 4 speed there is a fill hole on the side of the case, fill it up till it starts coming out. 80/90 gear oil is what I use, same in rear axle. Quote
greg g Posted October 28, 2016 Report Posted October 28, 2016 Is it a non synchro unit? Synchro brass and bronze parts do not like additives in modern oil. Or I Should say the stuff for hypoid shear flesh like white metal in the syncro pieces. No synchro probably no problem. With synchros gl 1 is spec's. Quote

Each person can choose to alter but foremost the recommendation should be as per the book. The oil for the rear hypoid is not meant for the transmission. The API has set standards that are the guidelines for lubes and their special contents and weight. Failure to use the right oil is often first seen in degraded performance and secondly by wear/damage acceleration to wrong ingredients or protective properties. The Lubrication section of your manual will state clearly the correct product for each lubrication application, quantity and service interval and how to. I recommend that you follow the manual as the products are still available today and they are available for that very purpose, to continue protecting the older machinery yet in use today. If you do not have the repair/service manual for your car/truck I highly recommend you obtain one. The book is chocked full of important details such as the lube, tune, brakes, electrical and other issues and specifically CAUTIONS that will not only protect your car/component but also you, the attending mechanic. 1 Quote
