Greg F Posted September 8, 2016 Report Posted September 8, 2016 Im trying to rebuild the carburetor on my 1940 P10. Somewhere I lost the step up spring that goes under the piston. The one I bought from Quadrate parts does not work, as it does not pop back up. Anyone have a place that sells these. Also tried Mikes Carb, but no luck. Assume the carb is a D6A2. Thanks as always, Greg Quote
Mark D Posted September 8, 2016 Report Posted September 8, 2016 Greg not sure they are over the counter parts anymore. Might be better served to grab a couple junk carbs off eBay and salvage them for parts. I *might* have one in my carb parts bin, will take a look on Saturday. Happen to have a part number for your carb? Quote
greg g Posted September 8, 2016 Report Posted September 8, 2016 maybe check with these folks, says for AFB but look familiar http://www.carburetor-parts.com/Carter-AFB-Metering-Rod-Springs_p_315.html Quote
Greg F Posted September 8, 2016 Author Report Posted September 8, 2016 Going to try this one as I may have bought the wrong one. Carter Step Up Piston Spring - (OEM # 61-484) The one I bought was 1.35" length and .215 diameter, this one is 1.45 length and .225 diameter. Not sure It will make a difference, but going to try. Greg, if this does not work, going to either try those or just buy a new carb. Thanks, Greg Quote
greg g Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Are you clear on the workings of that system? spring holds it open vacuum signal from the intake through the carb closes it (down) as intake vacuum increases. Make sure the vacuum path to and through the carb is clear. If the spring pressure is to great, the car will run rich, as the vacuum will not close it. Quote
Greg F Posted September 9, 2016 Author Report Posted September 9, 2016 Greg, Right now the spring is too short and does not keep it open( up). I think you are supposed to be able to push on the bar connecting the three plungers(?) and it should spring back up. Right now it just sits in the closed position. Hoping this other spring will help, as it is tough to find info on these springs. Might just break down and buy a new carb if this does not work. Greg Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 My Carter parts book shows the step up spring as # 61-135 for a P10 1940 Plymouth. This step up spring is shown for many 1946-50 Ply/DeSoto and Chrysler Carter BB carbs too. Rob Quote
greg g Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 You need to get one of those magnetic parts trays to keep things like springs and check balls and little screws from migrating to the deepest darkest corners of your garage. cheap insurance against the wayward urges of small parts. Lot less expensive than a new carb. If all else fails give George Asche a call, he probably has hundreds of those springs stored in one of those trays. His phone number should be inthe resources vendors area if it up and running under this new configuration. Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Inverted refrigerator magnets work well for holding those little parts. Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 I agree with Greg G, call George Asche. He has a bunch of carburetor parts. Quote
Greg F Posted September 9, 2016 Author Report Posted September 9, 2016 Is it possible the carb would work without that spring? I do not think I lost it as everything was on a small table together. Anyway ordered a few different springs, and if they don't work may try George. Thank Greg Quote
greg g Posted September 11, 2016 Report Posted September 11, 2016 will work? yes. Will run right? NO. Without the spring it would stay closed and not provide the fuel needed to sustain acceleration or hill climbing. The step up is designed to provide enrichment during low vacuum operation in addition to the initial squirt of the accelerater pump. Quote
