grinding inside of rims?

Happily, I've been connected with some free 15" rims and 215 70/75 used radials to put on my ply instead of my mismatched 16" rims (2 split (from trucks?) to unknown origin). The rims are from varied applications with slight differences, since I have front disc I have one rim that just barely contacts my caliper. My question is when is it safe\acceptable to do minor grinding on the inner side of a rim? Since that particular one still has an old bias ply on it still, will generated heat make a risk of tire explosion? I don't see how this small amount of grinding in the necessary area would affect structural integrity. One of the 16" splits had an implement tire on it and kept hitting fender.

From reading the many threads about tire size I decided to try the 215, anyone have clearance issues? the 205 would be "safer" clearance wise but I want as close to the 6.70's as possible. Hoping to get this rolling on the road with radials soon!

I would grind down the offending bits on the caliper. There is probably enough material there as to not affect the integrity of the calipers, and any grinding on a wheel would make me uncomfortable.

Just for the record, I went with the Scarebird disc kit and the directions stated to lightly grind an offending portion on the stock wheels if contact occurred (I think on those inner "bumps". Seriously.

Granted, I did not have those stock rims or have to do any grinding. So I considered it a possibility with my replacement rims as the brake business instructed such. I will take a closer look at what might be done with the caliper. I suspect the caliper edge barely contacts and have seen that part of the outer metal edge of a pad contacts. I guess the other side rim must just be deeper.

Thanks for the Dakota reminder, I'd forgotten. Any idea if those truck rims are "plain" jane steel looking? I'd hate to buy one odd looking alloy. The local yards way overcharge on used rims.

Have to be careful with early Dakota rims on non Dakota disc brake set-ups. Tried to put one on the front of my sons 85 Fifth Ave. the other day and it rubbed on the upper control arm. They are an odd ball rim.

Good news, I found a single oddball rim from from a Chrysler sitting that must have been off a disc car, it fit and cleared fine :) Tomorrow they're off to a tire shop. Any votes on whether I should face the thin white wall strip outward or inner?

Tim, where'd you find those neat dog dishes? All my rims now have the same 3 mount\clip tabs for caps so maybe I can find something to pretty them up.

These are pretty much on trucks, Ramchargers, some vans and of course the ones with the holes as shown are police caps for cooling the hubs...you may want to type in Dodge hubcap or maybe dogdish hubcap on the e-pay. The trim rings have to be fairly shallow type on the Dakota....

as this is not a P15/D24 item I post the following:
