Hi all,

I am new to this forum, so please go easy on me.

I am looking to swap a larger ci mopar flathead 6 engine into my 1928 Chrysler which has a 181ci flathead 25-1/4" length.

I am looking to re-build a  230ci (25-1/4") to swap into the Chrysler.

Does anyone know;

If I would have any issues with the existng 3 speed crash box mating up to the 230ci? ie. flywheel, pressure plate, clutch,      bell housing,  etc.

Will there be any issues with engine mounts?

Will my pedal assembly have any issues clearing the 230ci block? I am from Australia, so the pedals are on the right hand    side.

Will my starter motor bolt up?

Can I  use my existing exhaust and inlet manifold (from the 181cu) to keep the original updraft carby and exhaust?

I understand that I would need to use 230ci dissy, alternator, fuel pump, etc

Keep smiling,

Moe

First of all,the 218 Plymouth and the 230 Dodge engines are 23 inches long.

It's the 251 and 265 DeSoto and Chrysler engines that are 25 inches long.

G'day Moe, welcome to the forum

Cant really help you with your questions, as I've got a 40 Chrysler and my dad has a 29 4 cyl Plymouth. If the 181 is 25" long, knowing Chrysler then there's a fair chance it will all fit together. I suggest you chase up the local Chrysler / Vintage car club and see if anyone has a dead engine you can play with. Another possibility is contact Jim Robinson at Dodge Parts www.dodgeparts.com.au. He may know.

 I put a 218 (36 Dodge 23 inch same as 230)  into a 26 Dodge chassis and I have a 28 Chrysler 4 so I am familiar with a car like yours.

The best way to accomplish what you want would be to use a truck bell housing from a 1/2 ton Dodge truck which has the pedals  and Master Cylinder mounted on it   and also use a light truck transmission which has the brake band at the rear.

A 230 will make mincemeat out of the transmission you have.

On my 26, I used the 36 passenger bell housing and transmission and used a pedal mount from the same car mounted separately

to the frame.

Moe, welcome to the best mopar forum around, these guys know their stuff..........my understanding is that the pre 34/36 engines are a completely different animal to the later engines both in 23 and 25' sizeings.......the suggestion to use the truck style bellhousing is a good one as they were very similar to the early bellhousings and mount to a chassis somewhat similar to the earlier chassis...........you mention using your starter.....are you trying to keep 6volts?.........where are you located?.........Stewart Campbell in Newcastle would be a worthwhile contact as he has done a similar install........andyd

Thanks you blokes for your time and knowledge. I posted this in the wrong section a few days ago and got no responses.

Knuckleharley - were there no 25" 218/230ci blocks built by Chrysler for the Chrysler/Desoto models? I suspect that my Chrysler maybe a Canadian built model but I am not sure.

Ricky Luke - I would love to get my hands on a dead block to measure up and check out, it would answer all my questions, but it's almost impossible to find one here in Brisbane and probably all of Australia. By the way, I love Portland Vic.

dpollo - the master cylinder on my 28 Chrysler is under the drive seat (remember, its a right hand drive) and not mounted on the engine block like your USa models. I mentioned the pedal assembly because I am not sure if 218/230 block is wider on the right hand side. Do you think the 230 would break my 3 speed crash box?

Andydodge - my Chrysler has been converted to 12 volts.

I would not have any issues in going for other Chrysler enigines like 251/265ci , if the blocks are an easy swap. I only mentioned the 218/230ci models because of the readily parts availability, ie. pistons, gaskets, etc

I measured the distance between the front and rear engine mounts at 31-1/2" length. What is the measurement for a 218/230.

I can't help you there.  I know very little about export models, and for all I know there were different specs for different export locations.

Maybe you should email Chrysler and give them all the numbers on your car and ask them were it was built, where it was sold, and what the specs were originally?

Since it is a 1928 model, chances are the engine and trans in it may not even be the ones it left the factory with.
