the two I've dealt with were both solid stainless (no chrome) with plain old mild steel mounts spot welded to the stainless.

In other words they do Not come apart. At least easily. If you were to take it apart by removing the spot welds, how wold you put it back together?

A good chrome shop can however sand if needed to get very close and buff to look almost as nice as chrome. Not cheap in this area but the same prep would also be required for chrome work.

Keep up your fine work, I want to see the completed Suburban.

I dream that I can somehow finish my project 49/50 Suburban!

I stopped with the grille at a plater today he said he couldn't do anything with it being one piece.  He polished on a piece of it but he said it wasn't coming around like it was plain stainless. He asked me if there was some kind of coating on it.

Very interesting Maybe your previous information was correct?

If so, can he put in the tank that removes old chrome, rust etc. and polish or re-plate with chrome?

I had never heard of chroming stainless trim until I saw a 60's Pontiac with all the  stainless trim chromed. So it is possible.

I just took my 50 Ply suburban grille to a polisher. Mine had some minor scratches and small dings which he took out with no problem. He then tried to polish it...........it just started to blotch as he polished. He did say it is stainless but it has a light chrome over it. He asked me if it was ok to give it a satin look. I said no problem. He took and rubbed it with fine Scotch Brite pads and it looks great. I don't have any chrome on the car and the front bumper is going to be painted the same color as the car so this look of satin finish suits the look I am going for.

Mine is chrome plated too. I spent a lot of money getting the rest of the trim repaired and polished so I would like to do something with the grille. I am running out of ideas.

Here is a new twist to this thread. I just received another grille that I bought on Ebay. The chrome is coming off it but it is very straight. When I got the magnet out it stuck to it? This grille looks as if it was never installed on a car. The listing said it had been in storage for a long time. Aftermarket?

Now which one should I send out for plating?  The stainless one or the steel one?

I have even seen a after market all aluminum 1950 Plymouth grille.

It hung for years up on the display wall at Vintage Auto Parts in Woodinville, Wash.

Yes there is a all stainless and a stainless chrome plated grille made for the 1950 Plymouth's.

I was just talking about that a week ago at a local body shop that started to attempt to polish one of those grilles.
