Chuck51631 Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 I just ordered new battery cables for my 55 Plymouth Belvedere 6 cyl. 6volt system. I noticed the positive cable is connected to the engine with a head bolt. If I take out the head bolt will I disturb the head gasket? Right now I do not have any leaks and am not looking to change the head gasket. Someone told me to cut off the old one and hook the new cable up someplace on the engine. This sounds like a good idea except the cable is not that long. Had anyone else dealt with this issue? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Quote
bluefoxamazone Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 I had the same issue a few weeks ago while installing a new cable. I had to loosen a head bolt too. No problems afterwards... Make sure it is tight... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Should probably be Ok if re-tightened good. I Have done that without any trouble. Quote
busycoupe Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Sometimes a special head bolt is used that has a tapped hole in the top. A second, separate bolt is threaded into the tapped hole to attach the battery cable. Look carefully at your head bolts. Dave B. 1 Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 If you decide to remove and reinstall a head bolt , put sealer on the threads as some of the head bolts go into the water jacket . Also ... if it feels like the head bolt is too tight and it might snap off , go to plan B . 1 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) A special head bolt is installed where the ground battery cable goes. The cable does not require head bolt removal unless some one used the typical head bolt. Edited September 10, 2015 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
