sp15cspecial Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 Hi guys im, looking for a part number for a 1933 160 degree thermostat and a manafactuer . Ive rang up a parts store and they can match if they see it but i dont have the old and there 40 miles away . Quote
TodFitch Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 I think that would be the same as for my '33 Plymouth (part 612048), see: http://www.ply33.com/Parts/group7#612048 1 Quote
sp15cspecial Posted August 16, 2015 Author Report Posted August 16, 2015 Thanks Tod Have a day off next week and are going to drive up to them with the info and a bypass neck from another engine see if we cant match something. Hope to be doing a wedding this summer and without one i cant go more than 15 miles without getting too hot. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 Why would the lack of a thermostat make the engine too hot (he asked the class)? One would think that having the coolant rush through the hoses would cool the engine better. But I have learned, by reading this forum, that the coolant has to run slowly enough that the heat will transfer to the radiator. Part of the function of the thermostat, in addition to blocking the flow for quicker warmup, is to slow the flow enough for heat transfer. Am I right? Huh? Am I right? Quote

On Plymouth the first year for a bypass type thermostat was 1934 and that was on the DeLuxe (PE) model only. Did Dodge get that earlier? Quote
sp15cspecial Posted August 17, 2015 Author Report Posted August 17, 2015 Must have as it is the original engine in car i have it is the narrow engine with no water tube the spare motor i have is a out of a 34 model which is a wider block and both necks are the same . My car is a Canada built chassis and Australian Richards body late 33 made .Donald yes the water is going round to fast as i have new water pump and clean radiator when i get thermostat going to get freeze plugs and check block out as well . By reading this forum and talking to old mechanics you certainly require it to regulate to temp until i got a new radiator it ran fine little warmer on hot days but after seeing the condition of the old it must of acted like a restrictor slowing the flow just right. desoto1939 Posted August 18, 2015 Report Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) I looked in my literature for Autostats Thermostats. I had a catalog that went back to 1929 for the Dodge, Ply,According to the catalog they made a thermostat for 34-39 for the dodge, model 60 FHT 1933 Ply used 75FHT I have posted the information on this positing Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Thermostats.pdf Thermostats_NEW.pdf Thermostat pictures.pdf Edited August 18, 2015 by desoto1939 Quote
sp15cspecial Posted August 19, 2015 Author Report Posted August 19, 2015 Thanks Rich ive printed out a copy and ill take that up with me when i go . At the moment i went to the local parts chain suplier last night found a modern type that is 160 temp it Has a smaller flange so ive machined up a flange to go between the neck and head and will try that this weekend . My neck might be a little different to what is on your american cars as the pictures show that it goes up into the neck ( ie it has a raised hat above flange the internal of my neck has a flat going across the center of the opening and about 3/8 above the flange surface model 30 f is more like what would fit for me as the 60 would foul the casting. Ill post pics of it when get home for reference for anyone and so everyone can understand what im talking about lol Thanks Gareth Quote

sp15cspecial Posted August 24, 2015 Author Report Posted August 24, 2015 Looks like iv'e fixed the overheating problem siting at 180 at idle at 20 degree day celcius . Whent for a drive and the next issue reared its head Car felt funny to drive and temp went up to 200 so whent back home and jacked up now have found that 3 of the 4 brakes on the car had locked up . So now it time to fix the brakes and try again Quote
TodFitch Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 . . . so whent back home and jacked up now have found that 3 of the 4 brakes on the car had locked up . So now it time to fix the brakes and try again Might want to check the length of the push rod that goes between the pedal and the master cylinder. If it is adjusted wrong all the brakes will lock up. sp15cspecial Posted August 25, 2015 Author Report Posted August 25, 2015 Will do Tod have found that the pistons in the wheel cylinders have stuck and that the facings on the shoes have let go they have been bonded on so its off to the brake shop for some repairs and new seals as old have had it. Another question what thickness should the new linings be as i don't have a manual for this car and unsure if brake shop records will go that far back . Thanks Gareth Quote
TodFitch Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 . . . Another question what thickness should the new linings be as i don't have a manual for this car and unsure if brake shop records will go that far back I haven't seen a number on the lining thickness. If I recall correctly, one of the Master Tech slide shows on the Imperial site mentions that they made thicker linings for use with drums that had been turned. But I've not seen anything that listed the original or thicker dimensions. Quote
Dbalfisto Posted December 31, 2015 Report Posted December 31, 2015 Reading this as I have a similar issue. As to the brakes, I replaced all the flexible lines as they had collapsed internally. Quote
