Olddaddy Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 I mocked up an alternator/AC bracket today. I used an original generator bracket to mount the AC pump, and welded on a late model slant/6 bracket to mount the alternator. I need to work out an idler between the crank pulley and AC pump to prevent the belts rubbing against the motor mount. Advice appreciated. Quote
Olddaddy Posted June 16, 2007 Author Report Posted June 16, 2007 One of the pics didn't load, try again....... Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 Good job, where theres a will theres a way. Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 Can't you just space the pulleys out a little to give you clearance? My question is: Where did you get the dual groove crank pulley? The only one I have ever seen is on George Asche's DeSoto (He runs a 6V generator and a 12V alternator) Quote
Olddaddy Posted June 17, 2007 Author Report Posted June 17, 2007 I made the crank pulley by welding a second row onto a single groove pulley, the later narrow style belts. The spacing won't change the line of the belt as it passes the motor mount, something has to move it up away from the mount, an idler. Quote
Lou Earle Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Try it another way- run a belt to the water pump crank and ac unit only the run ,on a double pulley, on the ac unit and the alternator a separate belt to run the alternator- that is the set up I am working on now. That was the standard set up for Ford mustangs etc- the 6 cyl. I have also seen it on several other rods. Also you can mount a double pulley on the water pump and run the alternator off the water pump on the other side I am also experimenting with that. Lou Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Hi, I purchased another stock pulley from Mitchell Motors. Had it welded on the original minus the center spline opening. Ran the AC pump on the passenger side. But to each his own, whatever works. One pulley for the AC by itself, one for the Alternator and water pump. I mounted the AC bracket on the timeing chain cover bolts. Then I had it chromed. Finished product, not bad eh? I have since replaced the blue flex fan with a chrome one. have to look good too,, Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Sorry, I'm not very good at taking pics. Just tried to take some with a side view of the pulleys but I got way to much lighte in them. Point is, its whatever works. I made my mock ups from scrap aluminum that I bolted together, then took it to a welder to make a finish, or one piece at least product. Good luck, keep at it... Again, sorry for the quality. Quote

Charlie, the only thing I'd be worried about with your arrangement would be the amount of belt wrap you have on the compressor. With so little wrap I'd be afraid the pulley would slip under load. Just a thought.......... Brad Quote

Charlie; Have you considered using a serpentine belt with a couple of idler pulleys? Quote
Lou Earle Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 I ve read in an old book that no less than 30 degrees wrap is needed- therwise it take to much tension on the belt. I think that was why mustang went to the arrangement for the triangle then from th3 ac to the alternator Lou Quote
Olddaddy Posted June 18, 2007 Author Report Posted June 18, 2007 Well, I'm pretty open at this point, just looking for something that will work well. I'd be interested in a serpentine setup if I knew anything about them and how to adapt one to the flathead. Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 George Asche also suggested that the serpentine belts would make a superior setup. he had never tried it, but he thought maybe the pulleys from a 318 would fit the flathead. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 For a serpentine setup all the accesories are fixed in place. Then there is a spring loaded tensioner that can be retracted to replace the belt. The pulley's have 2 styles depending on whether for front or back side of the belt runs on that pulley. Most modern vehicles of 1 giant belt for everything. However my dads 00 GMC still has a seperate belt for his AC. Quote
