wildwilf Posted September 21, 2014 Author Report Posted September 21, 2014 Was there but it didn't tell me much Quote
BobB Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 Wow, according to this, my 52B3B's engine is the correct year, but it came from a Plymouth 6 CAR (number starts with P23). That also confirms it is a 218ci. is there anything I should do differently knowing this? Does this mean a differently designed engine with different specs or just that this individual engine, made according to a common design, was originally placed in a car rather than a truck? thx, Bob Quote
JBNeal Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 Verifying the engine casting date, found between the distributor & the oilpan, is important in getting the correct head gasket & rear main seal, as I believe there was a redesign of these parts somewhere around '51. I had ordered a gasket set for my '48, and the rear main rope seals would not fit in the engine, which I found out years later that I actually had a '55 Plymouth 230 and not a '48 Dodge Truck 218. I've been looking through various other sources, and the best I can tell is that the D43 is a 230. Quote

The 230 is a 23 inch American engine, not Johnny Canuck.. BTW, use the 251 or 265, if that's what you can find... Edited September 22, 2014 by Fargos-Go-Far Quote
wildwilf Posted September 22, 2014 Author Report Posted September 22, 2014 thanks for that piece of info so it is probably a 228 because it 53 dodge D43 motor Quote
wildwilf Posted September 22, 2014 Author Report Posted September 22, 2014 (edited) fel_pro lists a head gasket for a 53 coronet as a 230 Canadian built so hopefully that is it. Edited September 22, 2014 by wildwilf Quote

T120 Posted September 22, 2014 Report Posted September 22, 2014 Noticed this from another thread this morning - Some further info for you... http://p15-d24.com/topic/36924-engine-number-identification/ 1 Quote
wildwilf Posted September 23, 2014 Author Report Posted September 23, 2014 Thanks Ralph That was a big help because the # is D43 5733 C so it is a 230CID 25 inch Canadian motor. I really appreciate everyone's help Thanks Quote
T120 Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) Wilf,You're welcome. Appears to be a "typo" in Bill Watson's info.- should read bore size was the same, stroke was changed for the 228 cu in. (see chart post # 6) Edited September 23, 2014 by Ralph D25cpe Quote
bach4660 Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 Don't ignore what Fargos go far said use the 251, everytime I have gone for parts in Surrey BC, it is the only one that shows up in the books. 1 Quote
55 Fargo Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 Maybe Wilf just wants a 230, get all those speed parts that were harder to get for the longer 25 inch engine.....LOL No 25 inch 230, but Dodge cars and pickup trucks did use the 228s......... Quote
wildwilf Posted September 23, 2014 Author Report Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) Fel_pro lists a 53 dodge coronet and wayfair as a 230 Canadian built 25 inch motor. and North Shore parts can get the gaskets Fel-Pro 7688 C head gasket, OS 915 C oil Pan Gasket and VS 917 C valve cover gasket I don't really care if the gaskets are for a 228, 230, or 251 as long as they fit and do the job.
