YukonJack Posted September 20, 2014 Report Posted September 20, 2014 About a month ago my horn started to blow when I turn the steering wheel. Happens while parking but not when I'm driving. Anyone know what could cause this? I searched this topic but didn't get any results. Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 20, 2014 Report Posted September 20, 2014 Don't turn the steering wheel! There is a ground wire that fires the horn relay inside the steering column. Replace the wire. Quote
Reg Evans Posted September 20, 2014 Report Posted September 20, 2014 Yup, The wire is most likely grounding out where it exits the steering box. Quote
ChrisRice Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 Easy to replace that wire. Make sure to tape the old to the new and then pull the new wire through. It will save some time. Quote
1941Rick Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 Or the steering wheel is flexing. Happens when the plastic is cracked. Quote
_shel_ny Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 Or the steering wheel is flexing. Happens when the plastic is cracked. I'm going with this one as well. Something in the horn button/ring area. The wire through the column is going to move when driving. May be as simple as turning the spring a bit so that it does not make contact as easily. Quote
nonstop Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 Going with the wire - every time I turned, I was honking at people whether I wanted to or not! Quote
HotRodHerman Posted September 6, 2016 Report Posted September 6, 2016 I have the same problem with my 50 Coronet, honking sometimes when just turning the steering wheel... not sure what happens.... @YukonJack: could you solve the probem and how? Quote
atlbluz Posted September 6, 2016 Report Posted September 6, 2016 I took a piece of shrink tubing long enough to go from the steering wheel contact to out of the end of the column, to prevent the old fabric wire from grounding out. Worked great! Greg Quote
desoto1939 Posted September 6, 2016 Report Posted September 6, 2016 Most of the wire that was used for the horn wire was rubber coated so to prevent the cloth from wearing away. The shrink wrap is a good idea. As stated before tape the new wire to the old wire when pulling a new wire through the steering column there isa small metal tube that the wire needs to pass through in the steering box and this is the oly way to get the wire through the tube without any major issues. Greg Not saying that isn't the problem for HotRodHerman, but by 1950 the wire going down through the column was, at least in my findings,(at least a dozen) is a fairly flexible, rather durable, thicker rubber (about 1/8") insulated wire. Possibly if the wiring in the area where it exits into the engine bay had been altered it could cause unexpected wear there. Just wiggling the wire in the area, or some push pull up into the hole could reveal if the problem is in that area. Quote
