Smokeybear Posted May 29, 2014 Report Posted May 29, 2014 ...what 4 days, $50 worth of polish and sandpaper and a metric crapload of elbow grease gets you. From this to this I got really tired of trying to keep up the satin black paint. I keep it covered but the paint would oxidize and look chalky. Now I can wax and shine with the rest of the big boys at the car shows. It won't win any best paint awards but it's good enough to get me through another year or so before I paint it again. What say ye, gentlemen? 2 Quote

Smokeybear Posted May 29, 2014 Author Report Posted May 29, 2014 Im impressed . That looks pretty good! Did you color/ wet sand that first? Thanks! Yes, I started with 600, went to 1200, then finally 2000. I used Wizards Tubo cut for two passes then Wizards Final cut one pass. Then I used Chemical Brothers polish by hand and two coats of Turtle Wax Black. It still has some orange peel near the pinstripes because I didn't want to lose them. But otherwise I'm very satisfied. mrwrstory Posted May 29, 2014 Report Posted May 29, 2014 You're in a good spot, re maintenance, now. You can just wipe it off with detail spray when the dust or water spots get too bad. Mine's kinda like that and I like the option "NOT" always needing to polish it. Quote
Labrauer Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 Man that looks great. I have some water spots (well I should say runs) on mine and can't seem to get them off no matter what I have tried to do. I am afraid to use anything besides just wash. I have thought of taking the car to a shop to see if they could get the marks out but man that is expensive around here in Texas. Any one have any suggestions on how I can get rid of these without braking the bank? Quote

It's hard to suggest some type of repair process without knowing what's been tried. Quote
Smokeybear Posted May 31, 2014 Author Report Posted May 31, 2014 Looks much better dressed. Who did the art work? A local guy here in Pikeville. He set up at a carshow last year and made me a heck of a deal. $35 for all three tatoos. Quote
Smokeybear Posted May 31, 2014 Author Report Posted May 31, 2014 Was it this guy by chance? No, it was a young guy mid twenties, I think he was from Prestonsburg. He had a slammed flat black 46 or 47 chevy rat rod truck that he had done some pinstripe work on and a bunch of mailboxes and barstools that he was showing his work. It looked good so I let him at the Plymouth. He comes back every couple of months to the car shows my club puts on. I'll get his info. He does good work for a young guy. Quote
Lumpy Posted May 31, 2014 Report Posted May 31, 2014 My car has been in primer for about 15 years, and it is certainly not maintenance free. I generally work it over with steel wool, but just recently parked under some trees and got a bunch of little sap-spots that don't want to rub out. And of course I have to spot-prime it here and there, and it usually matches up once I steel wool it. I'm thinking that flat paint, and primer actually takes more maintenance. On the other hand, you can't take a spray can and touch up a good paint job either. Anyhow, love the look of your car Smokeybear, love the mirrors, I've got to get some. Quote
Smokeybear Posted June 3, 2014 Author Report Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) A little more work done today. I added the technostalgia LED taillights and truck light. It only took about an hour to install and hook up. I'm very pleased with the quality and function. I made a short video, click on the picture to view it. The tail light function looks blinky in the video because they actually blink 2000 times a second but you can't tell in real life. Edited June 3, 2014 by Smokeybear Quote
