Does anyone know if a 1957 Dodge Fargo - Crown & Pinion will fit into a 1947 Dodge rear axel housing. The reason I am asking is that we discovered today that the crown for the 47 had rust pitting on the inside of all the teeth. I have been advised the try and change it out. I have a friend whom has offered me a 57 rear axel.

the gears may well fit..however I recall there is a housing difference for some of the really lower gears..count the bolts on the hog head..however in the mid early 50's the axle spline count changed...you may have to use your original side gears....I believe a few have done this swap on this forum and may chime in...Young Ed for one...

I do have a little bit later model car diff in my 46. I do not know if the exchange goes as far as a 57. If it does you would most certainly have to change the side gears as that changed around 53-54.

The only places to find one would be ebay or the specialty vendors. You'd be better off finding a used assembly out of another truck or 40s to early 50s car and swapping it in whole.

got out my sub book today and best I can figure out by looking is the following....now this pertains only to the RING AND PINION gear set only at this time and I am not in any manner addressing differential carriers except to identify as  A & B and also does not include information on axle spline count that did make a change in early 50's....

per my sub book....(I did not look at Chrysler Desoto values but some years there also)

dodge trucks 1949- 1956 all 1/2 and 3/4 ton got ring and pinion set 112

all Plymouth cars 1949- 1958 6 cylinder used gear set 112

dodge cars 1949-1952 6 cylinder got set 112

112 is further broken up into the following gear set A and B as defined in the following;

note all gears from 37-11, (3.6) 39-11 (3.54) 41-11 (3.73) are known as A's and interchange all gears

41-10 (4.1) 43-10 (4.3) 43.9 (4.78) are know as B's and interchange...

A will not interchange with B unless proper differential case is used..I cannot determine for certain but book leads me to believe the 4 gear is a B and the 2 gear is an A....

NOTE..other years may apply with the 112 data being right...only my book was year specific and did not really go back further than 49 and ahead more than 1960

a picture of the carrier, differential gear count along with the information I posted above should be more than what you need to ensure that any set of gears you get NOS or used from a vender/breaker of parts..I do not have a part number for the various gear sets available...the numbers you have provided in the above thread should be enough information to the seller of these parts that they are one and same gears and thus the fit should be guaranteed
