On my 50 dodge fluid drive. If I try to stop without pushing in the clutch it feels like it is going to kill the engine. It is full of correct fluid. Can these go bad and freeze up? Should be able to let clutch out on starting from stop. But I have to slip the clutch to not kill it. When I got it a couple years ago it worked fine. Any suggestions?

My 48 did that when I first got it. It was a matter of carb, and tune up.

Highly unlikely that the fluid drive itself is causing the problem.

Dash pot come into play at a different time, and is likely not the problem

Sounds like the engine is struggling to run at idle with the FD coupling drag. I think maybe a compression test, tune up ect.

475 RPM is the factory idle speed. It still should upshift OK at 550-600 I would think.

Been fighting this gyro for a while. Today I ran all the checks in the manual. Everything passed except the wire to the interuptor switch. Replaced that wire and everything works the way it is supposed to.

So how did this fluid drive question get answered as a semi automatic transmission answer??? Perhaps if the trans was mentioned initially the answer would have been arrived at more effectively. As the fluid drive unit is not the transmission, and several different transmission were bolted behind them.

Sounds like a good ending to your Gyro-Matic issue's.

My 49 was doing this and it turned out to be the timimng was way retarded. I started turning the distributor and kept going until the problem went away. I had to advance almost to the point it started pinging but not quite.
