I have started to change my rear brakes over to disc.  I have a question.  What keeps the axle bearing race in place?  There's a 3/8" gap between the spindle/hub and the race.  Will the pressed fit into the axle housing keep it in?

rust is fast and vicious up here.  I'll take it off where it needs to be removed  before final put together.

I wouldn't count on the press fit to hold the bearing cup in place. The brake backing plate is supposed to retain the bearing, and shims between the brake backing plate and the axle flange will set the bearing preload. (both sides need to be adjusted together) You may want to cut the centers out of your drum brake backing plates, and sandwich them behind your new disc brake brackets, to retain the bearings.

 

By the way, where did the disc brake kit come from?

AAJ.  fits well goes together easily.  Just didn't like nothing holding in the bearing race.  Looked at the backing plates.  Might have to cut out the center as you suggested and weld them in to the AAJ brackets.  They provided no means of keeping the bearing race in place or for the outer seal.

My 1940 Dodge when I built it in the early 70's used a 1962 Oz Mopar tapered axle rear end.............I adapted 1970 Oz Valiant front discs onto the 1962 rear hubs, however I cut up the original 1962 brake backing plate into a small circular plate essentially the same size as the outer seal to hold the outer axle seal and bearing into the axle housing.......if the backing plate or its remains are not there then nothing holds the seal, bearing AND the whole axle in place......apart from the brake caliper and that ain't designed to do that and could get very messy, very quick.........chop up the backing plate and your good to go...........andyd

It wouldn't be that hard to make a bearing retainer plate from flat plate. But the backing plate also holds a seal that keeps bearing grease in and dirt/water out.

that's what I was thinking. Nothing holding it in there.  I'll cut up the backing plates and weld them into the adapter
