This steering gear came off a '47 1/2 ton truck.  It does not match the illustrations in the 41-47 Shop Manual. (Although the Manual is notorious for this type of error.)  It has been suggested it is from a Pilot House truck.  Does this match the steering gear of the P.H. trucks?  If so, do you know a source for the outer sector shaft seal?

Thanks.

are there any numbers cast into the body of the steering gear case?  Let me look in my mC cord gasket catalog.  Would you have any type of Mopar part number in your parts book that I might beable to reference agains.

I will look at 47 Dodge truck  to see what I can find.

Rich,

The seals shown in the 41-47 parts book is a felt washer with a brass retainer all held in by a spring.  This one has what looks like a very small version of the front wheel bearing seal.  Cast into the housing is the number 30978.  The seal has 50151 stamped into it.

Thanks for any help.

What are you trying to match it up to? There was a running change somewhere in the 39-47 run that involved the steering gear(and lots of other things) perhaps you need a late and thats an early.

This is rich Hartung

According to the seal number that you gave me  50151 this is a national seal and this corresponds to Victor 49319

But in my National oil seal under Dodge truck 1/2 ton   w series 41-47  lists for steering  National number 5Y24  which corresponds to the Chrysler number 612418

This the best that I can do with what you have given me to this point

Ed,

What I have is fine, I just want to figure out what it is before I do any work on it. Based on what you are saying I suspect I have the later version because I know in 1940 they had a different seal altogether. Do you know if the change over carried into the Pilot House trucks?

The pilot house trucks had the axle moved forward which completely changed up the steering system. Based on that I would say no they didnt carry forward to the pilot houses.

Ed,

Sounds logical. The info about it being a Pilot House piece was probably incorrect.

Rich,

Those numbers you gave me cross to a timken 472560N. Preliminary measurements seem to match. Will see if I can find a

supplier tomorrow.

The 39-47 dodges used a box that used a horizontal sector shaft that moved the drag link in a front to rear direction, the PH trucks used a similar box rotated 90 degrees from the 39-47 design

, and used a more vertical sector shaft, that moved the drag link in a side to side motion.  It allowed for more directional travel, and a tighter turning radius.   Mike

You have the later 2nd version of the WC steering gearbox. It's used after serial #81134613 Detriot Built, and 9219033 except # 9219037 thru 9219045 - Los Angelos built.

All stated in the Dodge W series parts book.

Bob,

Thanks. I guess I was just looking in the wrong resource. The Shop Manual doesn't show that particular steering gear in their exploded view pictures--just the earlier versions.
