Don Coatney
At the National Desoto Convention this weekend I spotted this 1956 Desoto Indianapolis 500 Pace car. In 1956 the car was driven by L.I. Woolson and Tony Hulman was the passenger. In 1954 your car was driven by William C. Newburg.

Mopar
I just joined the site. I have a 54 royal convertible I just started restoring. I would be interest in the location of those vehicle in the Twin Cities. I am also looking for the piece of chrome trim that covers the back of the convertible top just in from of the trunk. I will also be contacting Don at Door Sills LLC for door sills. The convertible I have had some plastic sills that were in many pieces. I'm guessing they were after market. My door panels were also backed with cardboard that looked like someone replaced them. I will use 1/8" Masonite when I redo them.
greg g
masonite is Ok but the real stuff is available at auto upholstery shops and in my opinion easier to work with. It comes with a paintable leatherette finish, is moisture resistant, and easier to staple into. Check you area for auto, boat upholsterers, they get it in 4 x 8 sheets, you might get lucky and find some scraps large enough for your needs. It is refereed to a backer board. dodge59
THE PACECAR IS PAINTED ! Base coat / clear coat . ppg deltron with omni clear 161 it took approx 4 hours to paint it. it came out real nice !! very little dirt ......... not bad for doing it in my garage. boy.............. that was a big job though .. I was totally exhausted after that. I'll let it sit over the weekend and then start wet sanding and buffing her out.

I got it running and it runs like a swiss watch !! ..... actually runs better than the engine I just rebuilt in my other 54 dodge royal 4 door. 241 hemi. once I get the front clip on the convertible it will start to look like a car again. but it is coming along very nicely. john

dodge59
fstfish she is coming along nicely. worked on the dash the last couple days . it is all finished .. top is in base/coat flat to eliminate sun glare and rest is cleared in semi gloss just like the factory did it. just enough to have a little sheen to it. looks sweet ! greg g
wonder if might be advantageous to paint the top of the dash with satin or flat black. I had a car I thin it was a 65 Fairlane that had a big expanse of painted upper surface. It was unbareable in some light conditions so I masked it off to leave a little trim line and painted the rest flat black. made a big difference. dodge59
well ............. the 54 is starting to look like a car again.. It's 11pm and I just came in the house after installing the fenders, hood and radiator support. My brother and I tacked it and it took 9 hours. what a ((*&^(*&&^%$&^%$&^%$................ pics to follow tomorrow . john Edited August 12, 2014 by dodge59
Mopar
I've enjoyed watching your progress. I just started on my 54 royal convertible about 1 month ago. It is not a pace car. This year will be mostly taking it apart, replacing rusted out floor and trunk, rebuilding the engine,& cleaning up and painting the frame. The exterior body work and painting will have to wait until next year.
dodge59
Thanks mopar . Yeah ........that is a lot of work doing a complete resto. can you post some pics of your 54 dodge convertible for us to see ? that would be really cool . I still have not found some weatherstrip seals for the convertible top header yet.. these are such rare cars, not much is repopped yet. Thanks ! john
