Car hauler broker "Bait & Switch"

So I go to one of those hauler websites, enter in the info, and have about 10 companies email and call me prices to haul my ride.  I narrow it down to one guy, easy to talk to, does not talk bad about his competition, has good reviews.

Keep in mind he bid the job based on the car info I provided.  So we get down to wire...setting a date for hauling.  The day we are set to make the deal, I get an email saying his hauler wants another $100!

The driver says "the weight and length of the vehicle warrants more."

Have not heard from the broker.  No money ever changed hands thankfully.

I once got some quotes for transporting a car some distance and decided that I could, for the estimated cost, drive to the car, buy a trailer and haul it home...and get a mini-vacation to boot.

GET ANOTHER HAULER. SOUNDS AS IF THIS GUY WOULD HAUL THE CAR TO YOUR NEW DESTINATION AND THEN RAISE THE PRICE AGAIN AND THEN HOLD YOUR CAR AS RANSOME. YOU ALWAYS WANT THE PRICE IN WRITING AND WHAT KIND OF INSURANCE HE HAS ON THE VEHICLES THAT HE IS HAULING, HAS HE HAD ANY CLAIMS AGAINST HIM IN THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS. ALSO CALL THE INSURANCE CARRIER THAT HE HAS TO INVESTIGATE THE HAULER AND ALSO AS FOR THE NAME THAT THE ACCT IS UNDER.

BYER BE WARE.

Be thankful you didn't give him any money. Stories of these guys ripping people off are plenty. I had my own bad experience. I even had someone in the industry admit to me that they routinely lie and cheat. I wound up using a guy who had good recommendations on the HAMB and he was excellent.

One broker told me to never go with the lowest bid.  Brokers will low ball the price, knowing that they can't find anybody to haul your car that cheap.  Then on the day of pick up they call you to jack the price at the last possible moment.  If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

they are definitely preying on the fact that you are now hyped to get your car and the thought of any delays will sound worse than an increase in price...be aware of hidden charges of loading an in-op car though...they do not drive it on but is winched running or not...finding an independent is always your better hauler in my opinion...if you have a rod/custom/classic car dealer in your area...ask them who they recommend as a reliable carrier...odds are the broker does not know till the last minute the carrier...as he is just brokering the service...same as you are doing as an individual..I have heard the stories of where the broker has got his money and left you on the hook for the transporter..

As it stands now I am waiting back to hear from some guys that may do it for extra cash, not in the hauling business.  One guy has hauled a car for me before.  Could have been a real bad experience, that is for sure.
