cavisco1 Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 I was surfing around recently and found a site where there was a photo of a Pilothouse with a 258 inline AMC engine installed. It looked like a nice clean install. Unfortunately I had some other things to deal with at the time and did not bookmark the page. Has anyone else seen this truck? Does anyone know of any good sites where a modern inline was installed in a PH? It might open up some nice alternatives to the V8 swaps some people do when their flathead is missing or hopeless to rebuild. Scott. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 Not a pilothouse but I spotted this Chrysler with a stovebolt shiverlay installed. I thought it a rather strange combination but after talking with the owner I was told his original engine crapped out and he had this engine on hand. He said he is very happy with the power output and glad he did the swap. 1 Quote
Young Ed Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 I believe that guy posted here a few times and the truck was a junkyard work truck and they just grabbed something that ran to keep it functional. Quote
41/53dodges Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 I have often contemplated a jeep 4.0, but the 53' already does ok on its own! maybe later down the road... Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 I used to know a guy with a 68 Chev PU with a 258 Rambler. Lifter noises would come and go. It ran well though. Quote
gramps1951 Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 could have been a 232 last year for rambler was 1969 first year for 258 I think was 1971 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 It was a 258 out of a Matador. I replaced the 232 oil burner it had in the truck. Quote
cavisco1 Posted November 18, 2013 Author Report Posted November 18, 2013 Thanks GRAMPS1951. That is the one I remember seeing. Did you do the swap yourself? Any more details or photos? Did you have to cut the firewall? From the picture you posted it looks like a real clean swap. I assume you had to move the radiator forward and use an electric pusher fan. Where are you located? I'm near Columbia, SC Scott Quote
gramps1951 Posted November 18, 2013 Report Posted November 18, 2013 the firewall was not cut the radiator is mounted in front of the radiator support and the stock fan is used. I live just south of Raleigh nc. I have not seen one pilothouse truck while I have lived in nc and I have been here 10 years. one thing about these engines is they seem very heavy for a six wish it had the gear to gear setup like the inline chevy but beside that I love this engine not one problem in all the years I have owned it. I would put another back in here in a minute if I needed to. thanks neil Quote
