8SECONDSS Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 Going to start assembling my 218cu engine this weekend. I did some small and big block chevys in the past.I wanted to know what is a good assembly lube to use on this engine.I was using stp oil treatment on my other engines but wanted to know what is recommended. I have the two piece bolt on rear main seal and do you use sealer on the two ends of the rubber seal where it meets each other and where it meets the cap and the block? Any other things I should be aware of. I have a shop manual but everything is not clear. Thanks, Greg Quote
Young Ed Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 I would say whatever you used in the past would work again. We use a fresh tube of lubriplate. Quote
8SECONDSS Posted June 11, 2013 Author Report Posted June 11, 2013 I saw a picture of my type of rear main seal from felpro bs6300 and it comes with 2 gaskets and 4 of the rubber inserts. The rear main seal I got doen't have the gaskets and only 2 of the rubber inserts. My block is at the machine shop so I can't check it. Do I need the other 2 inserts and gaskets? thanks Quote
Desotodav Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 I have attached a photo of the rear seal kt that you mention. It comes with the 2 half seals, 4 dog-leg rubbers, and 2 small strips of rubber. The 4 dog-leg rubbers are 2 different sets of 2 - you only use 2 of them. The seal halves bolt straight to the back of the engine with six 7/16 bolts ( with a bit of gasket compound smeared on first). Quote
8SECONDSS Posted June 12, 2013 Author Report Posted June 12, 2013 Thanks for the reply. What kind of gasket compound do you use, Silicone? Quote
HanksB3B Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 (edited) Read my lips....No Silicone. Permatex Type "A" & Type "B" are good. There's other stuff out there too like Gasket-Cinch. It's worth a little research and discussion here for sure. While Silicone can be a miracle in some instances, it also can become your worst nightmare. Just my $0.02... 8SECONDSS Posted June 12, 2013 Author Report Posted June 12, 2013 looked at my old seal and looks like permatex on it. thanks Hank 1 Quote
John-T-53 Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 (edited) Use a high-tack gasket adhesive for the seal halves to the block/main cap, and permatex #2 (very sparingly!!!) to seal the halves at their mating point. Make none gets on the crank. Let is sit overnight before rotating the crank....I had problems with the seal spinning - had to re-set it a couple times before it stayed in place! EDIT: Make sure to lube the seal lip as well! Edited June 14, 2013 by John-T-53 Quote
