JIPJOBXX Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Just want to make sure that my shoes are in the right location -please check photo out-thanks Jon Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 Don could you please give me or anyone else interested in why they build into these old brakes one with shorter shoe braking material on one side? Thanks Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 (edited) Short shoe to the rear of the car on the old Lockheed Mopars. Modern cars most all short (primary) shoes to the front of the car. Edited May 27, 2013 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 So in the picture the shoe is on the wrong side??? right? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Your picture shows the drivers side (left) so yes the short shoe is installed wrong. The short shoe should be to the rear of the car. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 Thanks as I was looking at my manual and installed it that way but I could not determine which way the car was faceing! Thanks!!!!! Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 27, 2013 Author Report Posted May 27, 2013 Its looks to me that all four sets have the short brake shoes in the picture. I'm kind of confussed about this issue? When I took the brakes oft the back set were just like in the Dodgebya picture. Now the front one side had the short brake shoe but the other side did not. So I think I will just stick with all four being short shoes. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) Look again carefully at tjhe Chrysler Corp.picture I posted. It shows the four long shoe linings to the front of the car. The passenger side brake pictures are shown inverted .If you really want better braking get rid of the long/short shoe set! All eight shoes should be full length lining and of the same length. You will have better braking and longer lining wear. Bob Edited May 27, 2013 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 27, 2013 Author Report Posted May 27, 2013 I kind of wonder why they ever did go to that short brake shoe idea? What purpose did it serve and did it make much difference?? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 I just since last night chat looked at your picture...now in comparison to the book..in regard to the rear shoe that is shorter...the absence of the lining is on the fixed position (hole) end of the shoe..in your picture it is on the opposite end , the moving portion of the brake...so again this could well raise a second question regarding the folks that built these shoes..I also walked to the shop and looked at some old shoes I have laying about..they are as in the book with the lack of lining on the pivoting end of the shoe.. Dodgeb4ya Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) Early MoPar rear short shoes had the short lining shifted towards the heel of the shoe and Ford Lockheed had the short rear lining shifted to the toe of the shoe? Both are no energised type brakes. Go Figure. Why did chrysler go to that short rear shoe lining? Why did chrysler invent the center plane brake? Neither worked very well!
