freemansrodnrat Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 Hello, can anybody say to me what axle I have in my car and what is the stock gear ratio in the rear axle. I will get another ratio in the axle but first must know wich is the stock. Thanks Dirk Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 possible ratios are listed in the repair manual for your car on the average..as there could be one of several..you will still have to clean the hoghead up and find the actual ratio number stamped on the assembly.. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 What transmission? I would guess it is the M6 semi-auto 4 spd, with fluid drive coupler. 8 cylinder Chryslers did come with ratios such as 3.36,3.58,3.91. The 3.36 gears would allow you to cruise 70 mph all day long with that big 8 cyl engine. How fast are you driving the car, how does it sound? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 The std model C49 1950 Chrysler Saratoga and NewYorker "8" rear end ratio is 3.54. Bob Quote
freemansrodnrat Posted March 12, 2013 Author Report Posted March 12, 2013 Thank you all for answer, now I have found the 3.54 in a parts book and will show my axle tomorrow. My Chrysler has from stock the fluid drive, but last year I have build in a 46 Plymouth manual 3 speed, and have post in this forum, but can not find it again. The 3 speed works well, and I can drive 65 miles ever, but this is not my favorit to drive on highway, 50-55 miles in town or over the country is ok for me and better more performance in the first gear. This is my problem, have big wheels and a engine with a 2 carb Edmunds intake and last year one axle was brocken in the differential. Now I will buy better axles but do not know is this a 8 3/4 or 8 1/4 in my Chrysler and wich ratio because I will have a little slower ratio. What is a hoghead?? Dirk Quote
jboymechanic Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 "Hoghead" is a slang term for the differential carrier, it may also be called a "pumpkin" or "center section". Number on the carrier should indicate what size your ring gear is. Quote

John Reddie Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 What shape is your 1936 Studebaker Dictator Coupe in? Can you post a few pictures? That would be great and by the way, your Chrysler looks super. John R Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 Either a Mopar 8 1/4 or 8 3/4, with 3.55 gears, might be the ticket. Did you take out the fluid drive? Do you now have a regular clutch and 3 speed trans? My 47 Chrysler has a regular clutch and 3 spd trnas, with 3.73 gears. Stock tired 228 Canadian flat head 6. I kinda wish I had the fluid drive for nostalgia sake, but this was removed by my Uncle, who did not know any better, or maybe he did no better...... Quote

Hi Dirk, I do have fluid drive bellhousing and coupler, M^ trans too, but really do not have the desire right now to do all the work to swap back. My car was a Royal model, it possible came with just a fluid coupler and 3 spd trans, like the Dodges, but am happy with the performance enough, a 3 spd OD trans would also bolt right in too......
