Dan Hiebert Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 Hey all! I'm attending some training in Quantico, VA until March (not Marine Corps stuff). (Drat, missing out on those lovely Buffalo winters!) Although I'll be relatively busy, I should still have some time to wander aimlessley about in search of Old Iron one or two weekends. Anyone know of any decent salvage yards within an hour or so of here that I can go poke around in? I saw a bunch on Jefferson Davis Hwy between here and D.C., but those looked like all "new" stuff. Don't have too much time to get back on the Forum but once a week maybe. I hadn't been on for a month and was pleasantly surprised with the new site - very nice. Thanks in advance! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 drop a line to Joe Flanagan..he is in in the approximate area I think... Quote
58prostreet Posted February 2, 2013 Report Posted February 2, 2013 Dan, Philbates Auto in Lanexa, Va. Phone 804 843 9787. 16238 New Kent Hwy. I went there 2 years ago and he had approx 3000 cars. He said they had sold of about 4000 20s 30s and 40s the year before. You should call before to confirm hours. It is well worth the trip for a car guy. If you are in Quantico it is probably 50 to 75 miles south of you off I64 just of I295. Mr. Philbates and his wife ran it when I was there. They wer very old, but very pleasant people. Have fun Bob Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 2, 2013 Report Posted February 2, 2013 Look up Rodney and Chet. They are both in the area as is Jim Yergan Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 3, 2013 Report Posted February 3, 2013 Leon's in Culpeper. Over 100 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Even if you don't find anything, it's an incredible experience. Don't miss it. It's about an hour and a half due west from Quantico. He's only open until noon on Saturdays. Quote
jeff0547 Posted February 4, 2013 Report Posted February 4, 2013 Also try Fredricksburg Auto Salvage. About 1/2 hour south. Look 'um up and call first, they're a little tricky to find. I used to deal with "Marshall". Probably been 20 years since I was there. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 There are a number of yards around here however the folks are old. As Joe mentioned Leon's is by far the most interesting. I have been trying to get there all winter and part of the fall but have not gotten there yet. There is a yard in Winchester VA that I passed that I have to get back to. It seems I don't have the free time I use to have I don'tknow where the time goes Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted February 15, 2013 Author Report Posted February 15, 2013 Tried to get to Leon's in Culpeper last Saturday. Odd experience; I had called a couple days before and he said he'd be open. Got there at the appointed hour and the gate was closed with a "closed" signe prominently displayed. I called the number and no one would answer. Two signs on the gate, one said "Yard Admission 8-9 $20.00, 9-10 $200.00, 10-11 $300.00 and 11-12 $500.00", the other said that "due to people showing up after business hours, these are our new hours"; 8-10 Yard Admission, 8-12 Office Visits for Saturdays, and 8-10 Yard Admission, 8-2 Office Visits for the rest of the week. Closed Sundays. Don't think I'll try again. I'll just seek out one of the other locations in a couple weeks. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 Yeah, he's a cranky one, that Leon. Charging admission to get into the yard? That's new to me. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 I have never seen that sign, that's not to say it isn't there. my man leon is very "different" over the years he may have lost his mind. I don't know. I like him and I have been locked in his place many times between 1100-100 because that's when he picks up cars and gets his lunch. Don't give up on him, he has alot of P-15 cars there. I stripped the last P-9 he had and he let me have everything I wanted until it was bare he called me 2 weeks before he crushed it. Quote
