I got my chrome back from the local chrome shop today, He brings it up to us on sunday to beat shipping and to pick up new work. I got all the parts unwraped and discovered that some of the stuff was wavey. The bumpers looked like bad body work on a long body Chryslar. I was told that the price of nickle has gone up. Some of the parts looked like there was no chrome on it. I was wondering if anybody else was having this kind of problem with chrome shops. They broke one of my peices and did not tell me. Oh well I guess I will have to put a call in tommow.

Rodney;

Check with forum member olddaddy (Charlie Akers). He has had good luck with a chrome shop somewhere in Indiana.

I will be in your neighborhood for 3 weeks starting next week.

I agree. Just because the cost of materials went up after they quoted you, doesn't give them the right to give you a bad job. It's part of being in business. Usually, they get advance warnings of price increases and should have figured that cost in. If they didn't it's their fault not yours. If they felt they couldn't do the job right for what you were going to pay, they should have said so and gave you a price to do the job right. Then if you didn't want to pay it, cancel the order and give your parts back. Or, suck it in, do the job right and take the loss on that order.

The cost of bad publicity is still higher than the cost of nickel. It sounds like an excuse to me.

I did talk to the owner today and he was very sorry for the work. He told me that he did not know that part was broken, The wraper(person that preps the stuff for shipping) dropped the door spear. Admitted it. I have another set so I will give them the set to have chromed. I have delt with this company for many years (their father owned it first) Now the son's have it. I like these guy's and they do bend over backwards to please. He will come up in about 2 weeks and take the stuff back. When he did the plymouth(1940) it had so little chrome that I got it back in a month. This Studebaker hawk has alot of old rusty bumpers and pitted parts so they had to do alot of grinding on them I think that's why the waves are so visible, even my wife was finding flaws in the work. You know I had to have her look at it , after all it's half her money two:o The project is coming along nicely however the machinist is very old and my motor is not half done. I am so impatient or maybe that snake has me all wound up:rolleyes:

Dealt with many companies in this situation. Hope they aren't relying on their dad's legacy to pull them through. That'll only last for a little while.

Prepping the metal for plating is no different a concept than prepping your car for paint..it is merely a reflection of the base surface..it takes a special touch to feel the surface and even more important is that this should have been caught and corrected in the initial copper overlay...I had my plater in Virginia do some exceptional work on brass..steel etc..pot metal trim...not recommended..that my friend requires hours of detialing..that is what put this stuff over the top dollar wise. For those that like to feel their surface doing body work..want to amplify it..place a clean paper towel lighly between your hand and the surface...like turning up the volume on your stereo...

James, I think you may have the better platers out there, These guy's I use do not repair! They can chrome bumper that have been hit and dinged however they can not repair an item. I have had long talks with them because repairing a small item is not that had filling pits is a art that can be learned.
