JIPJOBXX Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 I have a little ranger pickup now and noticed that it uses about a quart every 300 miles. I have checked for leaks and cannot find any and was wondering if my truck could be burning that much oil and not be noticed out the tail pipe. Is there away to tell where this oil might be going? There is no blow buy what so ever and I was wondering if the emission controls on this 89 V6 work so good that what ever oil it using is just being burned up and nothing coming out the exhaust pipe? Any backyard test for this little problem? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 check you PCV these little devices cause lots of oil to disappear in form of vapor and crankcase pressure Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 6, 2012 Report Posted December 6, 2012 It's either leaking or being incinerated in you cat. A plugged up cat is never a good situation! 300 miles per quart-Thats a lot of oil consumption. You say no leaks so it has to be going out the header pipe and into the catalytic converter. The converter can hide all or most of the blue smoke up to a point then it will plug up. Bad rings, valve stem seals, plugged cylinder head drain back holes-causing oil level to rise above valve stem seals and flood them with oil, leaking lower intake manifold port gasket to valley chamber-sucking oil mist, PCV as mentioned or wrong application PCV. All of the above could be caused by a poorly maintained engine or high mileage. You might pull the cat loose and drive it, might PO the neighbors and see if there is now blue smoke barreling out the back of the truck. Just some ideas Jon. Bob Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted December 6, 2012 Author Report Posted December 6, 2012 Wish I had the history of this engine. The previous owner told me the engine only had about 6,000 miles on it and it look like it does. I will check out the PVC Valve tomorrow. The truck seems to have alot of power and the exhaust system doesn't seem to be blocked. Well I will let you guys know what I find out about the PVC valve tomorrow. I hope I did not get taken on this engine as its a nice truck and like I said it runs like a top. Quote
