jimfenick Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 Guys, Any suggestions on the lifting points to tie the chain to for engine removal? This is my first L Block. Do you also suggest taking the tranny out at the same time or seperating them before. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 I made 2 brackets to the outside corner (4) bolts (front and back as pairs) and lifted from there. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 You didn't say which model and what trans option it has, but I highly recommend removing the transmission from the bell housing first. You will also have to remove the clutch and brake pedals so that they will clear the steering column/gear box. I used one corner head bolt each, front and rear, to attach my chain. Merle Quote
jimfenick Posted October 1, 2012 Author Report Posted October 1, 2012 It is a B4B with a Truck-O-Matic. I have the cab, frenders and bed off so I am looking down at the engine on the frame. It looks like a pretty clean shot to get it out but I want the right lift points. Quote
Dan Babb Posted October 2, 2012 Report Posted October 2, 2012 I just bolted the chain to a couple of the head bolts. No probs. Id you want to, you can make a brachet out of some angle iron and mount those to the head. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 One good way is to take a couple of old spark plugs, knock out the porcelain and weld in bolts and a steel ring on top. Good for pulling engines and heads. On cars the factory manual recommends removing trans first then pulling engine and bellhousing together. This is on Fluid Drive models. With your sheet metal off you should be able to take engine, trans and all. Quote
1952B3b23 Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 I have a 52 B3b 1/2 ton with the 3 speed trans and am also in the process of pulling the engine. I have all the front sheet metal off but the cab still on. I would like to pull the tranny and engine out at the same time, is that possible? Or is it less work to take the tranny out first? Thanks, -Chris Quote
pflaming Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 I took my engine out three times. I would always take that tranny off. (1) it sticks out and hits everything, (2) it throws every thing off balance, (3) it's just IMHO alot easier, and not difficult to put back in. I did and I do not have a lift. Quote
HanksB3B Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 (edited) One good way is to take a couple of old spark plugs, knock out the porcelain and weld in bolts and a steel ring on top. Good for pulling engines and heads. I could never do that. One one my greatest fears in life is stripping a sparkplug hole. I'd be a lot more comfortable fabricating (or finding) two of those bent metal brackets bolted on the head bolts from a modern day engine for the express purpose of pulling the engine.
