Big_John Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 I'm in the middle of redoing the upholstery in my 53 Windsor. So far so good, rear seats and door panels are done. I've stripped the front seats down to the springs. The back portion of the front seat was clipped to the seat frame and then the cover goes over the back and the frame, but the bottom (or seat) part just kind of sits on the frame. Is this right? Should there be something holding the seat to the frame?? BTW, here's the back seat: And the door panels: Quote
Tom Skinner Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 Big John, I'm not sure about the 53 Windsor but my 48 Royal "Bench Seat" just bumps down into the cushioned surround it sort of is a tight thump it into place motion. The rear of the seat tucks down and in first - then the front half just drops/thumps down into place. Tom Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 (edited) I can say this for my 54 Plymouth....the rear seat is latched to some catches welded to the floor..you sit the seat in place and the angle of the latch with downward push of the seat forces the springs to bend just enough to let the seat drop behind the latch..removal is the pushing in of the bottom of the seat to again distort the springs enough to give clearance for removal.. thought I had a shot of that but instead I got mainly just the small repair I did to the floor section..did not show the latch I speak of.. Yep, my rear seat is like that too. My question is about the front seat though... LOL. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 ok..he speaks of front seat and yet describes and pictures the rear seat bottom.....the front seat bottom does sit within its own enclosure.. remove the rear bottom cushion..photograph the floor pan and post that.. Quote

And titles the thread "Front seat question" LOL!! It does get a little confusing at times.... But the rear seat picture is just there to show the new covers. The back seat has two upright "anchors" (for want of a better word that the spring clips too just as the 54 Plymouth you described does. Edited June 24, 2012 by Big_John Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 the picture is the very substance that I based my answer on..guess I may be guilty of reading in or assuming taht by the use of the word "front" that the reference would be the front of the back seat and what keeps it in that set position....I figured he was speaking with the 1000 word photo.. Big_John Posted June 24, 2012 Author Report Posted June 24, 2012 Just found a picture of what Tim is requesting. The anchor is in the lower right corner. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 that particular upright appears to use a bolt to attach the seat onto..look at the bottom of the seat and see if it has a set of little slotted legs of round spring steel on each side to run the bolt though..bolt will have a washer wide enough to catch both side of the wire loop leg.. Yes, the back of the rear seat has a small bracket that attaches to the floor and to the seat spring. It's not on for the picture, the seat is just hanging from the hooks. The bottom of the rear seat springs pushes over and clips down onto those uprights. No bolts. To remove the seat bottom, you push back and pull up. Here's a picture of the seat in question though.... The infamous and confusing front seat. This is the stripped frame. It's hard to make out, but the clips for the back of the front seat springs are there (4 places). My question has been about how the seat bottom sits in/on this frame. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 My 48 and the other similar mopars I've worked on just get pushed back and then pop into the steel frame so they can't slide forward. Quote

Young Ed Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 Thanks Ed! If you look at your old upholstery picture you can see the line in the material where it rested against the frame. Quote
