A batch of old cars coming up for sale in MO.....

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

April 28 is the date scheduled to have an auction on 150 cars from the 40s,

50s and 60s in southwest Missouri.

Evidently a fellow from northwest Ark bought them from the estate of a man he knew, who was

the victim of a shooting.

And, there are even more cars back in the woods......this is just the first

group of them.

They are displayed in a field at the southeast corner of U S Hwy 71

and MO Hwy 90 at the north edge of Jane, MO. There's a stop light

at that corner......just turn E onto 90 and there are a couple places

to park.

I spoke to the owner last night.....who said people are welcome to park

up by the road and walk over to look at the cars. At the time I stopped

there this afternoon, there were around 40 cars in place. The flatbed

rollback guy is working full time bringing them in from wherever they are

located.

I took pictures of about all of them today.......am including this link to

my PhotoBucket album for your viewing pleasure.

Some don't appear to have that much rust, some interiors are better than

others.....most are fairly run down.

So......enjoy the pics - if nothing else.

Will check back there in a couple days to see what else is new.

I asked the owner if he had any 47 Plymouth type cars.....he said "no"

but there may be a second series 49 and some 53-54 models. Will have

to wait and see.

So how many are you buying Bob?

Has to be a good project for you there to build and take to the HAMB Drags. Maybe the Grand Prix with the console mounted tach. That thing has either the 389 or 421 in it and also at least one of the 8 lug aluminum wheels.

Posted

I think it has all 4 of those finned wheels, Kirk.

Might be a fun project in there somewhere--maybe that 55 Chrysler that

may have a hemi..........

I don't think I'll make a purchase - but fun to watch.

In the last 9 months that we've been living in Anderson, I've been looking

for old cars. Had only found one small batch, which I still want to go and

inquire about. The current owner says there are about 350 cars in this

group. Must have been fairly hidden, or I just didn't go down the right

road. I assume that after this first auction, there will be a second and

third one.

I also probably should mention......Jane, MO is a wide spot in the road, about 5

miles N of the Mo/Ark state line on US 71....about 40 miles S of Joplin, and north of the

Ark towns of Bella Vista, Rogers and Fayetteville. (Go Hogs)

I went down to where the cars are today.....and discovered that no more

had been added.......yet. Still just 40.

I saw someone had opened the hood of the 55 Chrysler and the 56

DeSoto - to see what engine they had. The Chrysler had a poly motor,

but the DeSoto had a Hemi.

They're gonna have to get back after it if they expect to get 150

there for an auction.

More cars are now being added to the lineup.

I was there yesterday afternoon and additional vehicles were being hauled in.

The owner let me ride with him

to pick up one at the place where they've been sitting for up to 40 years.

Hilly and woodsy. A variety of ages, makes and models. A few old Mopars.

The owner said he will be using two area auctioneers and will have local

advertising. He said he plans on starting the smaller cars out at a $300

base bid, with larger vehicles starting at $400......as that's what he can

get for them for scrap metal.

He has titles for some, but not for all. No-title cars will be sold as for

parts only. He is a car person, and hopes someone out there can at

least use these cars for parts. Some have useable trim and stuff lying

inside.

Newest pictures will come first in my PhotoBucket album......about the

first 50 shots up to the large Dodge flatbed. A few pics toward the

middle were taken where the cars are. More pics as more cars brought

in.

I guess the deal is - if I post the link, it will work for me, but not

for others if not what it should be. So, I appreciate knowing, and can

therefore try to fix it.

Anyhow.....just posting the pics for possible viewing enjoyment.

All cars will need to be removed with a truck or trailer....none appear

to be running.

If any questions, I can try to answer. Otherwise, I hope to attend the

sale on the 28th as a spectator just to see how it goes.

It was cool, to me, to make the acquaintance of the cars' owner and

listen to his stories.

Thanks Bob for teasing me! Couple cars in there I wouldn't mind having including that 59 camino. The 1/4s don't even look too rusted.

This Stude was out there long enough for a tree to grow...........

I gather this is a desirable setup in a Grand Prix...............

Ed, I thought you might like this one.........

Oh believe me I noticed that one and the desoto with the crunched in roof. If that desoto still has the grill and or the hemi it should fetch a few bids.

This one is pretty rare.........a 1960 Edsel......last year they were made.

DSC04255.jpg

Some '60 Edsel facts from a website............

All 1960 Edsels were produced in the Louisville, KY manufacturing plant. (Although a few cars from the Allen Park, MI pilot plant are still in existence)

The 1960 Edsel introduced such innovations as horizontal coolant flow through the radiator to improve cooling, and placement of the muffler away from the passenger compartment to reduce heat.

Production of the 1960 Edsel began on September 14, 1959

Introduction of the 1960 line was made on October 15, 1959

The last official day of Edsel assembly was November 19, 1959

Total Production for all 1960 models: 2,846

With such a limited production run-time, the 1960 model included some of the rarest Edsel models of any year

Counterfeit 1960 Edsel Convertibles do exist! By taking hood and rear deck sheet metal from a 1960 Edsel sedan and modifying a 1960 Ford Sunliner, you have an Edsel forgery. (At a very rare production total of 76, and prices reaching $47,000 for a mint 1960 Edsel ragtop, it's easy to see why it happens). Don't be fooled - a true Edsel convertible has a correct dataplate solidly riveted to the pillar, a cross-member on the frame, and vehicle ID numbers that match the dataplate, found at various points along the frame.

Another set of facts..........the car in the sale is a Ranger 4 door sedan.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

1960 Edsel Ranger

4-Door Sedan

Model Number: 58A (Standard interior trim)

Total Production: 1,126

Model Number: 58B (Deluxe interior trim)

Total Production: 162

Original Sticker Price: $2,697

Curb Weight (lbs): 3700

Length (in.): 216.0

Width (in.): 81.5

Height (in.): 56.86

That DeSoto with the dented top doesn't have the toothy grille..........

it's a 56 model. It does have a hemi....and the rear window factory air.

DSC04285.jpg

It's a "Sportsman" model................

Well, it looks like they have now gotten the number of cars displayed

up to 150, maybe just a few more.

Went by this afternoon to check. The little parking area up by the

highway was full; several people were milling around looking at the

vehicles. One young fellow said - given the fact that so many cars

have been crushed a person likely won't see this great a variety of

makes and models around here again. He was pleased they were

being offered for sale. He's right, of course, as I know most of the

old yards are long gone. I don't know if the owner will send any

remaining cars after the sale to the crusher, or not. I don't think

he will want to take them back to the woods.

Oh.....and.....there are a few 50s Mopars in this newest group.

Would love to have the blue and white Lancer, but no where to put it and a pain to get it to TX anyway. Mom does have a garage not that far from there. Maybe I could talk her into leaving her car outside, put the Lancer in the garage and I could work on it every year when I am there for the HAMB drags and the couple of other times a year that I am there. At that rate I should be able to have it on the road before I croak.

That would be a car you don't see around here.

Too bad things are so far away from where we live.

I posted here and on the HAMB about the sale, but probably

would be only a few guys close enough to attend. Hope they

go to a new home with someone who can get them back on

the road. Don't plan on buying any myself.

Bob I'd like to thank you for sharing pic's of all these cars. There's a couple I've never seen nor knew of like that Kaiser Special. Odd yet different looking with it's rear windows and more. I also have a request if you take any more pictures there. Next to the pink Cadillac I noticed a blue El Camino. There weren't any front pictures so it's hard to say what yr it is but it looks like a 70's model. If you do make another trip would it be possible to take some pictures of it? If not that's fine too. It looks a great deal like my daily driver, same color and all.
