Hi Guy's;

Was wondering if any of you might know of a source for replacement cables for the E-brake? I have mine all disassembled at the moment to clean up the linkage and replace rusted out springs. My cable must have really stretched out over the years.....there are three of those old "U" shaped cable "adjusters" on it now....:eek:

Thanks in advance.

No one makes new cables with the stranded twisted wire outer core. Your adjustable bolt type Swages are probably uglier than my Marine Supply Swages, but bear this in mind there is a steel ball (at least with my firewall mounted hand brake lever) that fits into the handbrake lever that I'm betting would be very difficult to find an aftermarket manufacturer that is tooled up to fabricate this.

If yours works, don't fix it right now. If you know your cables outer core and inner cable measurements you can still find them at Pomona Swap Meet April 14th, or other junk yards. I have a little collection (maybe 2 or 3) that don't fit my truck but could me modified as I have already done with one of them.

Although I know over in Orange County you probably have Emergency Brake Police, here's what mine looks like:

Hank;

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that these would be available.

Geez another supply surprise. :rolleyes: I guess I should have known.

Well mine doesn't look anywhere near as nasty as yours does. Your outer jacket is really pretty ugly. Wonder what it looks like on the inside?

On my truck the linkage between the cable end and the E-brake was really crudded up. A couple of the clevis pins were frozen and the springs at the brake band were of course totally shot.

I have made up many control cables over the years for motorcycles and will have to take a look-see at the box of fittings I have. It's not that big a deal to make a new inner up especially if the outer jacket is in decent shape.

Btw: The ball you refer to is actually a special cable fitting that is size specific to the cable diameter and application. The cable passes through the fitting and is flared out slightly, pulled back into a small recess and soldered on.

I find that a good source of cable is my local u-pull-it yard. I find a full size van or other vehicle and cut the length I need. I drill out my old cable from the old fittings and weld them up with the replacement cable.

I ordered a new cable and outer sheath from an obsolete Mopar place in Temecula, CA a couple years ago. It had a plastic coated sheath and swagged ball on the upper end. The thing fell apart with the ball pulling out and the sheath ends pulling out too. My original sheath was perfect so I put the new cable inside that, and had the ball brazed on the end. Worked great until my e-brake went bye-bye with the old tranny!

If you have an original cable sheath, don't throw it out! Even if rusty, clean clean it up with a wire wheel and paint it.

Thanks,

John I guess that's what I was trying to say but I appreciate knowing here are other sources guys. I wanted to maintain the original look of the cable in the engine bay and didn't care (except for strength) if underneath the truck was perfect. I also didn't feel like spending upwards of $50 for something I new I could fix for $2.00.

Guess I'm real particular about some things and others just don't matter to me.
