B1B Keven Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 I've got a motor that I'm going to slowly start rebuilding. It has VERY little wear and was hoping to do this 'on the cheap' (sort of). The valve valleys weren't super dirty. I've been quoted $125 by my local shop for a dip in the hot tank. Yes/no? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 you lucky you get a choice...my local will not do any macnine work to a block he has not sepcifically cleaned himself..don't care for the practice myself...hot tanking is a question of whoice..if you have the cam bearings out..it will do a super job of cleaning with no damage done..however it is only as good as the rinsing of the chemicals..when dried and left behind..these get activated..never but never think a returned block from a machine ship is clean..far far from it in my experience.. Young Ed Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 As Tim touched on if you don't plan to replace the cam bearings the hot tanking is out. However I would say if you've got it this far apart you should replace the cam bearings. Quote
Dan Babb Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 When I was cleaning up the Hemi I'm putting in my truck, there were little spots of grime & grit hiding in the corners and I could never get them all cleaned up. Since I was spending money on getting a lot of new parts for it, I decided to have the engine completely torn down and tanked. I didn't want to run the risk have having some crap floating around and messing it up. I'd go for it. Quote
B1B Keven Posted February 28, 2012 Author Report Posted February 28, 2012 Well shoot. Thanks guys. I was hopin' to use the money towards new parts. Looks like I'll get tanked, I mean the block. Quote
MBF Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 On my slant 6, my machinist hottanked the block, bored the cylinders, shaved the deck and then give it another bath before installing the cam bearings. He builds race engines for a living, and that his is SOP. Mike Quote
