old rat 49 Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 What are the engine, trans and differential fluids every one is using now ? Topped everything off when I got the car last year and oil and filter change in engine. Put about a hundred miles on it this week since I got it legal to drive and doing ten to twenty miles a day now. Plan on renewing all fluids first really nice day next week and would like some suggestions. Oil pressure is running a little low at this time and will rebuild/replace pump soon. Quote
greg g Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 had good service from Tractor Supply Traveler Diesel oil. 10 40 but running in a recently rebuilt engine. Watch what you put in the transmission. Lots of the new gear lubes are not brass/bronze friendly (not good for syncros) Look for SG4 or lower. Quote

old rat 49 Posted February 12, 2012 Author Report Posted February 12, 2012 My very old greasy and well used service manual says to use SAE 80 FGL in the trans. Have spent 2 hours on line trying to find an equivelent modern grade and gotten nowhere. Quote

msawdey44 Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 I've been happy with Rotella-T 10w40 in my '50 Wayfarer. It had sat for 16 years when I got it, had huge amounts of crud evident in the valve lifter chambers, and a great deal of smoke once I got it started. After a couple thousand miles of running and a couple of oil changes, the smoking is completely gone and it seems very healthy. I gather the reason for going with diesel oils is to get the zinc for the flat lifters--not to say but there is a good deal of "discussion" about whether this is necessary. All I know is it's running well. Quote
1941Rick Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 Pennzoil makes an oil for syncromesh trans that is brass friendly Quote
