claybill Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 if your garage is like my garage you have various parts from various years on various shelves...waiting for various opportunities, yet to come....!! well, i must have about 3-4 extra flywheels from different engine episodes... curiosity showed that they were all the same in bolt patterns, the same teeth, the same dimensions..BUT ALL WERE DIFFERENT WEIGHTS! i mean really different. obviously , trucks vs. cars, would be different. my motorcycle racing days tell me that a lighter flywheel will give faster revs and a quicker take-off. and easier starts too. and conversely a heavy wheel gives better lugging power and idling in lower gears. does anyone have any information on direct applications for differing wheel weights? claybill Quote
claybill Posted April 16, 2007 Author Report Posted April 16, 2007 30 lookers but no replies... now, i wonder if nobody knows..or never noticed different weights, or maybe just dont care, or am i blowin' smoke and oughta use these flywheels as dinosauer frizbees !!! bill Quote
Young Ed Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 I know the truck ones are heavy! I have a car one in my pickup though. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 I would think that others, like myself have never had an abundance of these flywheels laying around at any given time and therefore really did not know there are a multitude of difference in weight..we know of 4 and 8 bolt flanges..one would think that trucks be a bit heavier...also in racing the process of making a flywheel lighter for abiltiy to rev quicker is known. On your finding and as a benefit to those who dismantle for resale, exact application should be marked on the removed flywheel as there are subtle differences. I did not first respond but did make mental note of your findings. Thanks for the info.... Quote
Young Ed Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 Tim you mean not everyone has a stack a foot tall of these.......... Quote
fredsv8shop Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 My 265 ci 6 came new out of the box and had no flywheel at all !! Runs perfect without it Fred Quote
