95ttoplt1 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 Hey guys my throttle wants to stick just above idle and I think I may be missing a spring. In the following link on page 14-5, plate 14-5 it shows the linkage that is on my truck. http://dodgepilothouseclub.org/know/ph_parts/b_14.pdf I have read on here where there may be a spring required off the top of throttle shaft to the inner fender. I did put a spring off the top of this throttle shaft to a little chome bracket I got at the part store, but it just looks cheesey. The inner fender makes more sense. The only other return spring on my truck is the 14-06-01 show in the 14-5 plate. It returns the linkage decently, but doesnt pull the carb all the way back to idle. So do I just have excessive play in the linkage at the carb, or am I missing a spring? Thanks Troy Quote
Jim Shepard Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 I ran a suitable spring from the inner fender to the top of the throttle lever. It worked fine. I've heard this was a common issue.... Quote
greg g Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 If you have the hand choke, does it have the high idle cam ( a ramp shaped piece of sheet metal on the throttle shaft that the the idle screw rides on?? If so make sure it releases all the way allowing the screw to sit on the thinest part of the cam. Some times when the linkage wears or when the choke butterfly isn't completely opened, these items can cause the cam to hang so that the screw is still on what would be a fast idle setting. Some tweaking of the linkage to make sure it is not hanging up, or to assure the choke butterfly is completly released in the choke off position might address your problem. Quote

The fast idle cam is working as advertised and the choke opens all the way. If I tap the throttle it will hang just off idle, and then you can just nudge the throttle shaft and it will fall to regular idle. I thought the fast idle cam as well but got it all wd-40'd up and it works like its 1953 again! Any one have a picture of this fenderwell spring? Quote

John-T-53 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 I replaced an inner fender side spring with 2 springs between a bracket on the lower linkage shaft and the firewall. Worked out fine... Quote

Thanks Troy Troy, pull your carb and inspect the sides of the throttle butterfly for wear near the throttle shaft, if no wear/slight wear is found loosen both screws slightly and recenter butterfly. if significant wear then of course butterfly replacement is in order. common problem, easy fix and no extra springs Quote
Guest P15-D24 Posted December 1, 2011 Report Posted December 1, 2011 Should have about 1/8" before it starts to engage the the throttle. Quote
