B1B Keven Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 I've been searching all morning and calling local tires shops, but I can't get a definitive answer. Can I safely mount a 225/75r x 16 on the stock 4 1/2 x 16 wheel? I saw in my search a member is running 225/75r x 15's on his 15 inch wheels. Thanks! Quote
austinsailor Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 I've had mine on for a couple years. Fit fine, look good, drives good. I used 42 Plymouth car wheels, I think 4". Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 Doubtful. Today's tires are meant to go on wider rims. Best to check with the tire dealer or manufacturer. The dealer should have the info in his catalog or you could check online. Quote
Alshere59 Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 (edited) I had the same reservations. Manufacturers have mnimum standards they want for proper wear etc. I went a bit narrower and have had no problems. Anyway here is a chart for you to look at but shows very little information on 16 inch wheels.. http://customwheelsmarket.com/rimwheelwidth1.html http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=194 Edited October 28, 2011 by Alshere59 Found another link with more detail. B1B Keven Posted October 28, 2011 Author Report Posted October 28, 2011 Well, today I found a pair of 215/85R 16's. Mounted and balanced for $80. Now I need a pair for the front. Quote
Dennis_MN Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Well, today I found a pair of 215/85R 16's. Mounted and balanced for $80. Now I need a pair for the front. I tried to buy that same smaller size that you first mentioned (225/75R) but the tire shop refused to mount them on my rims because they said they would roll off on corners. The smaller size would have been a closer match to 6.50 16 but I did think it was a good idea for the tire to stay on the rim. Quote
B1B Keven Posted October 29, 2011 Author Report Posted October 29, 2011 Well....Americas Tire said they'd mount the 225/75's and also said they might roll off the rims. I agree, the two should remain married. Shame though. There's a set of 5 Goodyear's with 70% tread for $100 on my local Craigslist. Quote
greg g Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 Would you share the brand and source of those tires? You don't see may 85 series around any more. Were they perhaps for the rear of a modern dually pickup? Quote
