BobT-47P15 Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 One model of the P15 radio grille has a ribbed or grooved strip that matches the ribbed strip on the glove box door. The other is smooth instead of ribbed. Does anyone know when one style replaced the other.....which came first?? (the chicken or the egg?) The round Special Deluxe emblem can be added to either type. Young Ed Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 I knew of both but I think all of mine are the smooth version. My car is a late 48 and came with a smooth one so I'd guess the other one was first and was later eliminated as either a cost cutting measure or from material shortages. Could also be differences between factories. Did you know there are at least 3 versions of the special deluxe name plates? Quote
OldDad67 Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 I have a real late build P-15, it was built and regestered in 1949 and it has the lower style with the emblem. Quote
randroid Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Gents, Pigiron was built in Los Angeles in October, 1947, and has the smooth style. I wonder if that might have been regional? -Randy Quote
Robin (UK) Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 My convertible was built in Detroit, September 2nd 1947. Ribbed trim on speaker grille and dash. Quote

That's a good looking car you have! <grin> My '47 is also a Detroit build; need to find out the build date. Has the same dash as yours. Was also originally red! John Quote

bobostski Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Is the ribbed piece cast into the grill of is it an add on? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) As I recall, it can be taken off but there are holes for attaching tabs. I would go look, but can't find my radio grilles right now -- packed into some plastic tub, or somewhere, after the tornado. Will probably be December sometime before the house gets done. Then, may be even longer til the detached garage (where the Plymouth stuff will reside) gets built. I need to begin sorting thru buckets and other containers full of small parts that got picked up from the garage floor or the neighbor's yard. Just last week, I ran onto a guy I know who acquired some old Mopar stuff from someone in an area town. Amongst that stuff are some n o s P15 radio grilles.....a couple smooth and a couple ribbed ones....still in boxes. I plan to try and buy a couple of them if not priced too high. The owner had not decided what to ask - so I said I would check back. ****P.S. Just found a pic of the grille with ribbed trim......shows the mounting holes for trim. RobertKB Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 My 1948 Dodge D25 has the smooth version. A 1947 Dodge D25 I parted out had the smooth one also. I do have one I am selling from an earlier D25 with the ribbing on it. Maybe it was a cost saving thing on the later half of production, or regional, or supplier based, or just a teaser added to the cars because they knew the cars were so well built that it would confuse owners 60+ years down the road. BobT-47P15 Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 Looks to me like that Dodge in the lower picture still has a bunch of decent looking dash parts, Robert. That steering wheel isn't too bad either. As some may, or may not know, stuff from a Canadian Dodge will fit a P15 since they are really the same car. Quote

Yes, the P15 and D25 are basically the same car except for some Dodge trim on the outside like the hood ornament, grille, and parking lights. Brake light bezel is different as it has Dodge on it instead of Plymouth. As can be seen in the picture there is Dodge in the steering wheel centre and above the radio speaker. Other trim is all the same. The D25 specific parts, though, are getting quite hard to find now-a-days. As for this picture, all the trim has been sold. However, I do have another complete set of trim I got from a hot rodder that is in very nice shape. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649&item=270829987212&sspagename=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT Quote
