40plyrod Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Does anyone know if the rear seat of a coupe is the same as a sedan? Also what years will interchange? I have finally found a guy locally that has a 1946 dodge coupe and wants to upgrade(?) his front bench to bucket seats. I'm going to try to put them in my 40 sedan, I know that I'll have to modify the seat bases because I made my own floor, but now he wants to replace the back seat too and offered it to me. Is a rear coupe seat different than a sedan? My 40 never had any seats when I got it so I have nothing to compare. Thanks Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Have you at least measured the width of the seat cushions, both bottom and back cushion, versus the space available in your car? I'm thinking a late 40s car may be larger than one from the early forties.....but don't know that for sure. Or, is the seller close enough you could simply go by and try the seats to see if they fit??? Quote
Andydodge Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 From what I have seen in my USA sourced Sth African built 41 Plymouth Coupe & a mates 1948 USA Plymouth 2dr sedan the split benches in both are basically the same frame, mounts etc but different upholstery patterns. From Memory the front bench in my 1940 Dodge 4dr Sedan, an Oz built car but using USA sourced bits the seat mounts/frame is the same apart from the split back part and that the seat base in the 1940 lifted out to access the battery. Have never seen a Club Coupe & as they were never sold here in Oz I can't comment re how they compare to a 4dr sedan.........dunno if this helps.......lol.......andyd Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Good question, not sure if this is an areas discussed here in depth..If this is any consulation, I have the back seat and front seat of a D24 Dodge in my 4 door P15, front used the original holes but seems to be a wee bit wider in the cushion (could be just the overstuff from the upholester) but still does not hit the doors..back fit right in....I found a D24 with good interior and got it for a nice price..even the door panels will go on the P15 but with exception..the door and window handles are same spacing as the Plymouth but the P15 is a smaller door..small being nice as it will be easy to trim the panel down from Dodge size to Plymouth.. 40plyrod Posted October 4, 2011 Author Report Posted October 4, 2011 Thanks for the help. The seller is close by so I will probably test fit the back seat I was just looking for a heads up first. As for the front it is nearly impossible to find a split-back bench seat out of anything here. I was getting so desperate that I was considering cutting down a way too big spilt bench out of a 63 chevy biscayne. The width on the 46 dodge seat seems to be good and I'm sure that modifying the mounting to fit my "custom built" floor will be a much easier task. I kept the mounting area and attach mounts for the back seat all the same as original and that's why I was asking if anyone had ever swapped between years, makes or models. How are the rear seats removed? Going from the brackets on mine it looks as though the seat bottom must come out first and then the seat back is pulled out bottom edge first to clear the tabs on the back of the seat, but what holds the seat bottom in? I hope they will work as he had them reupholstered about 5 years ago in the hopes of making them more comfortable to him but has decided for more modern seating. I'm willing to sacarfice possibly some comfort for the right look. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 In my 48 and 51 the back of the back seat hangs on two tabs and then bolts in at the bottom. The bottom of the back seat pushed in after that and hooks on two tabs that are welded to the floor. You can see them sticking up between the dynamat. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 probably not much use to you to know that I have a split back bench seat out of a P15 just laying in the barn..cushions are stored in the overhead of the shop.. Quote

Mine has a riser in the shape of the seat bottom welded to the floor, the tabs for the seat back look similar. Quote

Young Ed Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I'm serious. Sick of it laying around and taking up space. I almost threw it away earlier this summer. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I'd give him mine for the back seat..just think..stick the kids in the door normally and the neighbors can't tell that they folded back the seat and disappeared into the trunk..after about 15 kids get in..drive off with only two waving bye..great for going to the drive in.. Young Ed Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 When we were little we discovered the seat folded down and the passage way into the trunk of I believe my Moms maxda 626. My Mom likes to tell people the story of how she was standing by the car not doing anything and when someone asked her what she was up to had to reply "waiting for the kids to get out of the trunk" Quote
