Bingster Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 I bought one of those Speed Blaster sandblasting guns awhile back and it works great! Have been blasting the interior window garnish trim and all that rust comes off like a charm to reveal new metal like it was at the factory. Also great for bolts and washers, etc. The only down side to the Blaster is the small hopper that has to be filled when empty. It may be overkill, but I came up with the contraption in the attached photos. Works like a charm! Takes about two seconds to refill the hopper and you're blasting again. The problem, as I saw it, was to elevate the five gallon pail high enough to fill the Blaster hopper easily. But that pail gets heavy with media in it, so there had to be a way to fill the pail at ground level and then raise it for use while blasting. I think it is self-explanatory how it works. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 necessity is the mother of invention..way to use your head..do you shoot against a back drop and recycle your media..I do this the best I can when using my pressure pot out of doors...big heavy tarp on the ground with another behind the items being blasted..if it is not a windy day I get a goodly portion of my media back for reuse...as you use it and the grit gets broken up and turns to dust..it pretty much drifts out of range of my backdrop so all in all works good.. Don Coatney Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 I understand the no hub couplers and the slide gate but where is the button you push to activate the fulcrum? And I do assume you say "BLAST OFF" when you push the button! Good job! Improvision at it fullest (pun intended) Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 I love the Speed Blaster. And I hate how frequently you have to fill it up. Nice workaround. I wore mine out and bought a similar thing from Harbor Freight and the only way to describe it is laughable. It is so crappy that after my first attempt at using it, I threw it in the trash. Quote
oldodge41 Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 Good thinking! I love this kind of ingenuity. And nice craftsmanship as well. Quote
randroid Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 Gents, After reading this thread and looking around on Google I have come to be of the opinion that one of these contraptions must be mine. There are many pieces to Pigiron that I've been contemplating lately and they could benefit greatly from one. I've relegated them to a winter project, probably to be done with w/d paper and warm water, and inside the roof of Pigiron is slightly rusted and I want it nice before I put in a new headliner. All the window garnishes need to be done but paint remover makes as much of a mess with them as it does cleaning old paint and they still need to be sanded anyway, and having done two of them some-what I've come to realize that a Speed Blaster will save me many hours and do a better job. I have a few questions about it though, which is the reason for this long-winded post. Not the least of them is where to buy one and which one to buy because none of the local big box stores carry them and the ones I see online range from $45 to almost $70. Then there are three colors of them so are there different grades of them or does the color indicate nothing more than a different color? What this boils down to is that do I buy one online at the best price I can find or is there a trick to it? Anybody have an extra for sale or a favorite place to get one? -Randy Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 If you're referring to the Speed Blaster, get the orange one with black lettering like the one Bingster shows in his pictures. I was never disappointed with mine and wore it completely out. Pay for it and save yourself a lot of headache down the road. I think the name might be trademarked. As I said, I tried at least one imitation and it was crap-ola. Quote
Bingster Posted October 3, 2011 Author Report Posted October 3, 2011 Mine is made by Zendex - they have a website - but Google Speed Blaster and you will see various places to buy. I think Amazon has it at a good price and with no shipping if over $25 which it is. I think I paid $50-%60 for it. Zendex makes it in more than one color and the color makes no difference. Quote
Bingster Posted October 3, 2011 Author Report Posted October 3, 2011 Apparently Amazon doesn't pay shipping on this but order from Zendex directly and they do ship free. Blaster is $59.00. When you ad shipping to ther discount Blasters you come up about the same. I am in no way connected with Zendex! Quote
randroid Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 Bingster, Thanks for the tip (read: doing my homework for me). I'll probably order one directly from Zendex in the next day or two because if I buy directly through them and there's any problem they'll likely be more interested in helping. Thanks to everyone for advice. When I'm blasting the paint and crud from the window garnishes I'll be thinking of each of you. -Randy Quote
