joenailer Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 (edited) got some insight on distributors through a previous thread but I'm still stuck. I have a 1948 B-1-C with a 6 cylinder flat head that I think is a 218. the part number on the distributor is 12-33564. I noticed when I removed the cap it was loose from side to side. I'm used to a tight cap that is registered with a notch that won't let it move radially, which brings me to the problem. My distributor doesn't have any type of cutout along the rim, inside or out that I an find. the current cap has a long 1" notch but nowwhere to register causing the cap to sit uneven. I was told it was running 2-3 years ago, I'm not sure how. NAPA offered the correct cap and rotor according to their book but it was too small. HELP! after a little homework, Its a Autolite IAP-4001-1 distributor Edited September 30, 2011 by joenailer Quote
greg g Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 the flaties used at least 3 different distributors, whihc are all interchangable among the 23.5 inch blocks. They differ in hight of body, depth of cap, coil wire terminal, and location of points. Couple different rotors also. It is necessary to take the autolite type number and not the dist part number when getting tune up parts. They also differ a bit in advance curves also but not enough to make much of a driving difference. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 I only have a car reference handy but it says the 1AT distributor was used on 1950 to 53 Dodge six. 1AT-4003 for 1950. IAT 4011 51-53 So it appears your distributor is off a 1950 or thereabouts. If you go to buy points, cap, rotor or condenser ask for parts for a 1950 Dodge and they should be the right ones. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 I looked in my Motor manual at Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge car and Plymouth applications..did not see that number listed at all..sorry but I do not have a truck reference book.. Quote
joenailer Posted October 3, 2011 Author Report Posted October 3, 2011 found the correct distributor kit at Roberts. whats interesting is NAPA was 38.00 for cap and rotor, Roberts was 27 for the cap, rotor, coil, points. said it was oem too. Quote
joenailer Posted October 12, 2011 Author Report Posted October 12, 2011 Spent several hours chasing a grounded wire and finally got everything working. Good spark from the coil and plugs. Reset everything and it turned over maybe twice and hit, amazing enough, it idles smooth and even revs up without a miss. I'm shocked Now onto replacing glass and looking into a wire harness. Quote
