blueskies Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Just checking out the pics my ARCH RACE RIVAL Don C. has of his factory damper- It has a six bolt pattern that mounts it with the pulley to the hub that fits to the end of the crank. I then checked out the only pic I have of my pulley- It has only two bolts to the flange of the hub. This is my factory 218 pulley and hub, on a 230 crank. It never did have a damper, just the pulley. I've been looking at the Fluidamr site, they have universal dampers that can be adapted to fit, but they all have bolt patterns similar to Don's factory damper. At first I was thinking I might be able to just bolt one of them on with a spacer to the front of my pulley, but after looking at the pics, there are only two bolts... Looks like I'd have to pull the hub and have it tapped for more holes. Did the 218 engines ever come with dampers? Pete Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 My 218 truck engine pulley looks just like yours. No damper. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Pete; My original P-15 218CI engine had a six bolt damper (the unpainted one you pictured). Are you sure your front hub has only two bolt holes? The six holes are not symetric. One or more holes is drilled off center. The damper will only bolt on one way. I may have a spare hub. I will go look. I do not have a spare damper as I sold it to a forum member a while back. I had to "skinny up" the damper I have on my engine so my RACE WINNING BIG BLOCK FULL RACE DESOTO ENGINE would fit in my car. Quote
James_Douglas Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Sometime around 1950 they started welding the hub to the pulley to save production time. They left 2 holes for the damper...very odd though. James Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 It is yours if you want it. Has a groove where the seal rides. A speedy sleeve is in order. Let me know and I will send it. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 7, 2007 Report Posted April 7, 2007 I think the 2 remaining holes were left for a puller to remove the hub. At least thats what we use them for. Quote
DutchEdwin Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 I think the 2 remaining holes were left for a puller to remove the hub. At least that's what we use them for. Yep, that's what my manual say's, plym 1955. Only use the holes to remove it from the crank. I have the same problem. I want to install a damper. Two problems occur, There are no holes that match the pattern of the damper and if you install a damper, the pulley is misaligned, as you can see in the pictures. I'm in talks with hemihotheads, who will sell a damper with a pulley that will align again. Quote

Thanks Don... I just bought a NOS hub from VPW, $15. Now to get my hands on the right pulley and balancer. Greg G gave me a tip for the set... I sent Fluidampr an e-mail about adapting their universal damper rings to the bolt pattern on the six bolt hub, but have not yet heard back from them. Pete Quote
