grease monkey Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 i have a 48 dodge with a fliud drive trans. its making like a metalic grinding noise when i coast down hill with the clutch out. does any one have any suggestions as to whats up with it Quote
Tom Skinner Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 Possibly a Throw Out Bearing on the way out? Hopefully just some adjustment to quite it back to normal? Tom Quote
greg g Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 which transmission do you have behind the fluid drive unit?? Quote
PatS.... Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 I would look at U-joints or E-brake before the trans. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 I had a modern vehicle with a standard transmission that did the same thing several years ago - it was the throw-out bearing. Quote
grease monkey Posted August 20, 2011 Author Report Posted August 20, 2011 (edited) im pretty sure i checked the rearend trans and fluid coupling. buy ya ill doube check. it sounds like its coming from around the trans. n it happens when i have my foot off the clutch n im coasting down hill. i could be wrong but it doesnt seem like its a clutch adjustment cause it grabs n takes off fine... like it almost sounds like the fins in the fluid coupling r hitting each other some. have u hear of the bearing or bushing on the shaft going out n throwing off the alignment n it making that noise? or am i wrong? haha Edited August 20, 2011 by grease monkey Quote
Tom Skinner Posted August 20, 2011 Report Posted August 20, 2011 I believe Page 60 in my 1942-1948 Chrysler Service Manual States: Seal Noise : A resonant vibration in the fluid drive seal and spring assembly sometimes causes a squealing noise. This noise usually occurs at speeds of 15 mph or when car is held by brakes and is in gear with clutch engaged. The sound varies in volume and ceases when clutch pedal is depressed. This noise can be removed by installing a damper. A Pilot Bushing can cause noise, or the Clutch Throw out Bearing - if they are on their way out so to speak. When my Throw Out Bearing was going before I did my Clutch job it sort of sounded like an electric can openener grinding until I depressed my Clutch Pedal. Looks Like a Look-See at the Clutch area is at hand. Take your time and Jack and Block your Vehicle up carefully about 2 feet in the air with cinder blocks and timbers and climb under that baby and take a nap. Once well rested take the Lower Clutch Cover off. A sure sign of Throw Out Bearing going bad is metal shavings and such around the area. The Pilot Bushing is tough to tell unless you pull the Transmission off. The Damper Seal is bad if there is a lot of Oil (Hydraulic) leaking in the Clutch Housing Area. Replace all once your all the way in there if need be because its a bit of work getting that baby to that point. Tom Quote
Tom Skinner Posted August 20, 2011 Report Posted August 20, 2011 Shel Bizzy is correct. The Clutch Release Bearing is probably the culprit. I have been calling it the Throw Out Bearing. If 1" Play is not maintained it will spin. I know also that if its shot it will make alot of noise/metal shavings though. It can be looked at after removing the lower Bell Housing Cover. A tell tale sign of trouble is metal shavings in the area. Tom Quote
B-Watson Posted August 20, 2011 Report Posted August 20, 2011 Drove my 48 fluid drive Dodge to work and back today. About 25 miles each way with some hills, and some flat. As I drove, I would coast down the hill and tried to imagine what would make noise then, and not at other times. No help, as mine did not make any unusual noises, and I apparently don't have enough imagination:( Is this only when coasting down hill? How about coasting at other times? I thought, fan clipping the radiator? from very bad motor mounts, but that would take quit an incline:D Back to another posters suggestion. Could the band on the parking brake be so bad that it is making those noises, and still be functional enough to work? (noise covered by other noises until coasting) Possibly horribly out of adjustment and the lining completely worn away on one side? (there are 3 adjustments.) Mine was missing one adjustment screw, but was centered enough to not make noises, and still somewhat hold the car. The parking brake has a drum with the band around it. When the brake is released, the band pulls away from the drum. Thus there should not any noise from the parking brake. If there were problems, you would hear it all the time as the clutch has no effect on the parking brake. If you do have noises only when the clutch is released, it is the clutch. Going downhill you are picking speed, unlike coasting on flat ground or going uphill, which probably adds to the problem. Quote
grease monkey Posted August 22, 2011 Author Report Posted August 22, 2011 im thinking it is the clutch release bearing. cause i took the trans out n there is ALOT of shavings in the bellhousing. n i replaced the master cyl for the brakes so the clutch adjustment got messed with. n it wouldnt suprise me in the least if the release bearing is worn out and or the clutch is out of adjustment. from what all of u r saying thats what it seems to be to me. n ya i checked the motor mounts, there good n they r tight. by the way thanks for all the help! grease monkey Posted August 22, 2011 Author Report Posted August 22, 2011 oh ya the parking brake has some space around it so i dont think its that Quote
