41/53dodges Posted May 31, 2011 Report Share Posted May 31, 2011 anybody know how hard it would be to install four speed stick in place of a 3speed column? i have access to an M37, a 55' 1/2 tonner, and a 51' panel truck for the trans. ideas? the column works great, i just dont like the feel of it... greg g Posted May 31, 2011 Report Share Posted May 31, 2011 Only thing your going to gain is a super low granny gear, not usable unless you need to pull your house of its foundation. So unless you are hauling heavy loads up hills or pulling strings of box cars around the switching yard, it's probably not worth the effort. Merle Coggins Posted May 31, 2011 Report Share Posted May 31, 2011 Yup, what they said... The bell housing is different for the 4 speed due to a wider bolt pattern. And all you would gain, besides having a floor shift, is the added grannie, stump pullin', gear. If you want a floor shift without too much trouble, look for a 3 speed floor shift frim a '49 or earlier. The u-joint would be different but you may be able to swap your output flange and be OK.
