1950 Special Deluxe Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 I have been after these photos for a while. We do not have a large downtown skyline, but it looks very nice in the Summer. Spent most of yesterday washing, polishing the chrome and using a cleaner wax on the car. Headed out early this morning to a spot on the riverbank that I had picked out. The large hotel in the background is called the Delta Bessborough, it was built by Canadian National Railway starting in 1928. Quote
1940plymouth Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 AWESOME photos, glad you had the Dodge out and about. Isn't it a nice feeling to drive these old MOPARs. Thanks for sharing, Bob Quote
randroid Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 1950 Special Deluxe, What a magnificent building! Seems that when Canadian railroads wanted to attract people to their lines they built grand hotels and when their American counterparts wanted to do the same the YMCA was established. How often do Canadian railroads go broke and need to merge? -Randy Quote
greg g Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 (edited) Have had the pleasure of staying in a couple of those Canadian railway hotels. One in Calgary, one in Ottawa. Both in the Grand Chatteau style. And both with program premium points paying the bill. Great plaes to stay but most not owned by the railways any longer. Good looking pics. I believe the three or four major Canadian roads, including Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, the Great Western, and Grand Trunk, Centra Vermont now all operate under the CP Banner, or some under BNSF (Burlington, Northern and Sante Fe, itself a conglomeration of flags) and the Passenger traffic went to Via kind of like AmTrak Edited May 22, 2011 by greg g Quote
RobertKB Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 Canadian Pacific and Canadian National are two very separate railroads. Not a lot of love lost between them. CP bought Burlington Northern some time ago and had plans to further expand into the US. It is a huge corporation. The railway hotels were built in the days when the railroad was king. All built on a grand scale and still very enjoyable to stay in today. Quote
randroid Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 Gents, Just an afterthought; The railroads built one on the side of Mt. Hood, OR, and it is gorgeous. It's where the original "Shining" was filmed. -Randy Quote
