oldcarlover Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Looking for an overdrive tranny from 1936 - 1939 plymouth Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 I think it would probably be a Borg Warner R7 model. But, not an expert however. Someone will know. Quote
Alshere59 Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 (edited) I would think either a R7 or R10 would bolt in. I have a R7 1940 vintage OD bolted to a 1955 230 vintage motor. I kept the bell housing from my original 1950 Plymouth 218 motor to make it work. Also had to lengthen the clutch rod 3/4 of an inch. Basically you may have to mix and match it a bit, but it should bolt in. Edited May 19, 2011 by Alshere59 Quote
claybill Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 i think what all are trying to say is...there wasnt one for those years. something from 1950 onward must be retrofitted.. bill Quote
Young Ed Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 Bill plymouth didn't have OD but some of the other lines did. And they will fit in a plymouth and still be floor shift. Dad and I were given one out of an airflow that we sold on ebay. And a guy in our club found one for his 39 coupe. Quote
Fluid drive Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 Although the 'official' word is that Plymouths were not offered with overdrives in the 1930's I have an old AC speedometer box that lists cables for the 1936 models equipped with overdrive. Chrysler was a company that has been known to offer Plymouths with Chrysler equipment if the customer wished to pay for that equipment. I have an overdrive in my '36 that I completely rebuilt a number of years ago. I rememebr that it is labeled "Motor Improvement Corporation" and is simply a mechanical overdirve without the ignition interrupter and kickdown switch the later O.D used. The early units were housed in a one piece case and I had no modifications to make to my clutch or linkage but I did have to shorten the driveshaft. If you have questions that I can answer regarding the installation of that kind of an accessory please email me. Fluid Drive Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 The R7 OD trans is the same length as the R10. the 1939 plymouth had an early and late trans-floor shift and the later column shift. Both used a shorter trans than the R7. The shift cover aslo extends over the top of the bell housing. I think the R6 OD is the one trans that can be adapted to work with some mods. Bob Quote
Young Ed Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 Bob 39s had column and floor shift but the split isnt early/late is roadking(cheap) or the deluxe. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 You are right Ed! My mistake. When did the "Finger Touch" start? Quote
