Merle Coggins Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 I was talking with a customer yesterday and knowing that I have an old Dodge truck he tells me that he is clearing out some things in his barn and he has a Dodge flathead complete with trans and honeycomb radiator. He couldn't give ma any more details of what it came out of but says that the engine turns and isn't frozen. I asked "how much?", to which he said, "I don't know, $200... does that sound about right?". So I might be able to negotiate some with him. I have no need for it but I'm tempted to go have a look and possible drag it home to add to my storage. I figure someone might need it someday. If anyone may be interested in this engine, trans, or radiator, let me know. Merle Quote
41/53dodges Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 i might be interested in having a spare trans around, depending on what it is, and the 41' will likely need a radiator. maybe if somebody wants to split? i don't think my dad would be happy with any more engines around... Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 19, 2011 Author Report Posted May 19, 2011 I stopped and had a look at this engine today. It's a bit older that I had expected. The engine # is D2-49543. Who can tell me the exact vintage? Also, whoever removed this engine and radiator cut the radiator mounting flanges with a torch. I guess removing a few bolts was too much work. Here's some pics, Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 19, 2011 Author Report Posted May 19, 2011 More Pics Top radiator tank What's the second arm on the starter for? It seems to just be spring loaded and not connected to anything. The push rod was sitting on top of the engine and appeared to attach to both levers on the starter motor. Is the second one just the return spring for the push rod? Quote
41/53dodges Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 how many speeds does the trans have? looks like it might not fit our PH trucks for some odd reason... i may still be interested in the radiator for my 41', any chance you could get some measurements? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Im sure that's a 3spd trans but its an older car version. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 19, 2011 Author Report Posted May 19, 2011 The radiator is small compared to what I'm used to from my truck. What would the displacement of this engine be? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Merle plymouths of that era had 201s. The dodge would be either a 201 or a 218. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 I think those two levers on the starter relate to the fact that it is operated by a foot pedal in the car. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 One certainly does. My truck has a pedal operated starter but only 1 lever. My guess is 1 is for the electric piece and one moves the starter drive forward. Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 I think the most forward lever is a spring return only. If you watched the video of the guy restoring the Plymouth his return spring was a coil spring mounted on the rod going through the firewall. My guess is this setup does not have such a coil spring but uses the rotating spring seen attached to the forward lever. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 19, 2011 Author Report Posted May 19, 2011 That's what I was thinking too. That arm isn't connected to anything except for the pivot mount and it's spring. The push rod is sitting on the head and has a rubber pad on one end and two link pin holes at the other end. Unless there's something missing, or left with the car, it would be logical that it is used as a return spring and to support the push rod. Quote
