Front Driver side brake shoe problem

Well I got my new brake shoes installed on the old Dodge and took it out for a test run! The drivers side still grabs but thank god when I backed up and went forward again it stops. After I did this back up idea and I then went out for a short trip it didn't grab on bit. So my question what could cause this brake to lock up just once in awhile? Could it be the return spring located inside between the shoes. I can't see how that could be because I have a tool to spread the one spring to get it hooked up and it takes alot of pressure to do this. Maybe it is the wheel cyclinder? but its not leaking and why would it only do it once in awhile? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

No but I made up a device that works on the same principle. I used a plastic T Fitting that fit over the front axle shaft and put plastic pipe on the T and ran it up even with the shoes at which point I put a 90 degree elbow with another peice of PVC pipe. And then I made a swipe around the shoes and it worked out just great. It works perfectly for getting the shoes in symmetrically with the axle.

But now the rear brake is giving me problems as it is locking up now. The front brake seems to be ok for now but I'm going to take that hub oft and put some grease on those retainer shims that have the felt in them tomorrow.

It would be nice to have the right alignment tools but I don't so I just do it as best as I can.:(

I'm pretty much sure that that hole is open as I bought a new master cylinder (Stainless steel sleeve) but I will check it today again. Ok getting on past that I was wondering if my brake cylinder is the right unit? Could I have a latter brake cylinder because when I first got the car someone had installed a new cylinder as I could see it was fairly new (Blue in color). So could anyone tell me if there is a difference between a 42 brake cylinder and a newer unit. This one fits into position ok but if it was a latter one could the cylinder bore be different? Reason I came up with this idea was that 1946 Mopars had two brake cylinders per drum. So maybe it could have different specs? Need an answer on this-thanks Jon:confused:

It could be that the front shoe assembly wasn't exactly concentric with the drum and centered itself when you applied the brake backing up. Definately pull that rear drum to make sure everthing is 'OK'.

Jon,

Yes, the P-15 was the 1946-1948 post war model.

It looks like the 1942s used the same wheel cylinders as the 1941s (P-12s) and not the ones used in the post war P-15s.

Well I'm going to try something different today I'm going to swap out the passengers side drum and return spring and see if that makes a difference! Also I will lube those felt washers. If the problem goes to the other side than it will be one of two thing, the drum or the spring. Jon

A BIG YAHOO FOR ME AS I FINALLY FIGURED OUT THE BRAKE PROBLEM!!!!!!!

I TOOK OFT BOTH HUBS AND MADE SURE EVERYTHING WAS THE SAME ON BOTH SIDE BUT THEN I NOTICE A LITTLE FLAT WARSHER THAT CREATES A SPACE BETWEEN THE BRAKE SHOE AND THE DRUM!!!!!! I NEVER NOTICED ON THE SIDE THAT WAS STICKING THAT WASHER WAS MISSING!!!!!!!!!! AS I NEVER HAD WORKED ON THIS PART OF THE BRAKES I NEVER THOUGHT TO CHECK IT OUT. THE PREVIOUS GUY WHO OWNED THIS CAR 19 YEARS AGO PUT THAT SHIPYARD JUKE SHOE MATERIAL ON THE SHOES AND IN THE PROCESS HE MUST HAVE REMOVED THE PRIMARY ADJUSTING BOLT AND PLACED THE WASHER ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BACKING PLATE ON THE AXEL.

SO I REMOVED THE CASTEL NUT THAT HOLD THE PRIMARY AJUSTING BOLT IN PLACE AND REMOVED THE WASHER AND PUT IT BACK ON BUT THIS TIME ON THE INSIDE OF THE BACKING PLATE. NOW ALL I HAFT TO DO IS BLEED THE BRAKES AGAIN AND I WILL BE DOWN THE ROAD AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
