maverick Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 batting .000 for finding a place to (re)make the exhaust outa SS....oddly lots of places won't touch SS...and the flange on the header pipe has lots of "NO" all over it.So I think for now...coated or plain...someday when I'm rich I can find the SS system of my dreams. why would the flange not be an ideal set-up? Dave72dt Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 A bit of material inside the manifold will help prevent or delay gasket burnout which I've seen happen on manifolds and pipes that rely solely on the the gasket for dealing. Finger sander, grinder? That translate to a die grinder or Dremel style? . I'd want it snug but not wedged in. A tapered lead- in edge on the pipe or manifold will reduce chance of an edge hanging. So .020 isn't an issue just draw it in? I wouldn't take the flange off but I don't like the idea of forcing it, so id grind a little off the manifold. Finger sander to me is a little narrow belt sander that looks like a finger and you can get into small areas. Edited May 4, 2011 by ggdad1951 Quote
Dave72dt Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 I'd prefer .010 over .020. The farther it has to be drawn in the less tolerance for oversize. The cast in the manifold has gone who knows how many heat cycles and has gotten brittle. It'll tolerate less pressure than when it was new. That's what my logic tells me anyway. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Mark do you have .020 worth of paint on that manifold? The manifold should slide in freely with no forcing. Quote

I'll grind a bit out of the manifold so it slips in...I just don't like the idea of forcing. Thanks for confirming guys! Hopefully Saturday morning is the day! as for the "finger grinder": http://pathon.com/dynafile.htm Edited May 5, 2011 by ggdad1951 Quote
